February | 2010 | Daily Words and Acts
https://dailywordsandacts.wordpress.com/2010/02
Daily Words and Acts. Daily Words and Acts. Archive for February, 2010. The Swan Thieves by Elizabeth Kostova. February 14, 2010. Excellent. Although it focused on some of the main topics–history, foreign locales, art in some form–none of these three things were done very well. However, when she describes both modern Paris and historic France, Kostova doesn’t inspire any wanderlust. This is a fun read, and certainly worth the time. (Don’t be dismayed by the size–it’s not that long a...February 8, 2010.

potpourri-of-books: March 2013

Tuesday, March 19, 2013. Wolf Hall by Hillary Mantel. Henry VIII, Cromwell, Thomas More—three larger than life personages all appear in Hillary Mantel's book Wolf Hall. While I can't imagine wanting to live in England at that time, I can vicariously, and from a time distance of over 484 years, be involved in the machinations of the realm of Henry VIII. To be released from a marriage in an age when the Pope's authority meant a strict obedience to his Papacy required stealth, cunning and diplomacy. Knowing...

Wednesday, October 12, 2011. Murphy's Law by Rhys Bowen. I usually don't read cozy mysteries, but a friend mentioned Rhys Bowen's series "starring" Molly Murphy after I mentioned an interest in New York City at the turn of the century. That is the 1900's. Perhaps I'm the wrong person to write this review because the entire book was like a long soap opera; however, Molly was quite endearing. Molly is the narrator of the story and it is through her eyes that we meet the O'Connor family and enter their home...

potpourri-of-books: Wild by Cheryl Strayed

Wednesday, January 16, 2013. Wild by Cheryl Strayed. I just finished reading Wild. By Cheryl Strayed and for the space of three days I was transported to the Pacific Crest Trail. This isn't the usual memoir about someone who loves to explore, has the requisite skill set, and then sets out. Cheryl knows nothing about backpacking nor does she know too much about how to select adequate boots for a 1,100 mile trek. In August the Vail Daily. He told the Associated Press that "Often the places that we fly over...

Sunday, May 27, 2012. I realize that I miss writing some book reviews. What I don't miss are the challenges and the need to write a review for every book I read. That's hogwash. So I'm back with a completely different agenda. I'll write some reviews, some short capsules , and some one sentence mentions. Challenges might be another person's delight, but for me it felt like a ball and chain. I've cast aside all the challenges, save one which fits me. So I'm glad that I was so tardy in discarding the site.

Sunday, February 17, 2013. The Elegance of the Hedgehog. Seeing or not seeing. The light of the body is the eye." Luke 11:34. Watch out in case (you) fail to see the light." N.T. Wright. Isaac, almost blind and unable to discern which of his two sons deserved to receive the blessing, blesses his younger son. Watch that your eye doesn't become darkened.". It takes time to move beyond the cursory glance to a place where you see the other—really see them. In Muriel Barbery's book The Elegance of the Hedgehog.

Sunday, November 20, 2011. The Paper Garden By Molly Peacock. I’ve been taking a collage course this past fall and someone mentioned this book to me because Mrs. Delaney may have been the earliest creator of “mosaick” flowers. My collages tend to be either conceptual or abstract or a combination of both, Mrs. Delaney created intricate and botanically accurate flowers. Patrick died when Mary was sixty-eight. Their marriage had been blissful and she was distraught. For awhile she couldn’t fin...At the age ...

Thursday, December 29, 2011. After reading the rave reviews for this book and deciding that I needed to make some forays into contemporary fantasy, I checked it out of the Speed Reads—one week to finish and then a fine of twenty-five cents a day. They don't know the boundaries of the contest—where it will take place or even how the winners will be determined. Even the two children will not know of the contest. In order to tie everything together and move the plot along Morgenstern conjures up a theatre p...
