So, Derek’s gone. I was finding it a little hard to maintain, this morning. I’d known him for a while; we weren’t close but, like a whole lot of other people around geekdom and Vancouver, I’d been drawn in tighter and tighter as he wrote his way through mortal illness, always facing forward and keeping the story flowing even when everyone knew how, and recently when, it would end. The last photo I took of Derek. On this blog over the years, between late 2006. And just a few weeks ago. In these days of he...

Category Archives: Fly Tying. 139 Yards of shattered glass. May 10, 2015. It was one of those rare opportune moments. Where a simple resupply of frog yarn revealed something really useful at a compelling price even better ample tonnage remaining to satisfy any fly tier’s ambition to lay in a goodly supply. I use it consistently in Shad flies. And anything requiring saddle hackles. Apparently for Christmas 2014, Bernat introduced a series called, Bernat Boa Holidays , that added three additional festive s...

I am assuming that you no longer have the store with the incredible dubbings (or I am not looking in the right place). At one point, I had bought most every color variation and have bee tying with them ever since. Good to see you back! January 2, 2016 at 5:56 pm. Fossil Record shows Didymo Geminata is native rather than invasive. May 11, 2014. Knowing our history of continental land bridges and pre-historic migrants overwhelming natives, would have consensus on how many thousands of years it takes something to dominate its surroundings to become the new native but you’d be wrong. The Delaware River shows Didymo having been present for. Tens of thousands of years. What’s even more interesting is the final definitive science will employ DNA sequencing of the respec...

The Achilles Heel to any modern marvel. August 2, 2015. As I read through the. On how technology is improving fishing, my initial reaction was very predictable like all. Before me I snorted and swore mighty oaths as to how the Planet was going to Hell. The lure of Technology has always been our passion of. What it might mean.

Just another Scientopia site. Latest Kidney Health News. Fun Time for #ManiMonday. By whizbang) May 23 2016. My sapphire blue tweexy. This weekend I tried out my new tweexy. A manicure aid. This silicon device holds your nail polish bottle on your hand while you paint its nails. The device worked as advertised. My only issue involved lighting. I sat on a sofa with a nearby table lamp, and the nails on my left hand got shadowed by the tweexy. Having a more flexible light source would help the situation.

The first decision is whether you’re a collector or a fisherman. December 8, 2008. I started with the best of intentions;. First the news of the Hardy manufacturing exodus to Korea, and me suffering that odd moment of clarity, where I’m wondering about all those extra spools I promised myself I’d eventually get – and never did. To rarify them far in excess of their true value. It’s a pilgrimage to the vendor’s back room or an overlooked dusty shelf somewhere behind the register, or its eBay, ...I was a h...

Nothing makes the fur fly like using the wife’s coffee grinder. January 29, 2009. Are a tough crowd, you’ll regret us painting your house because of all the spots we miss – but we’ll march you across the street and insist the color looks fine. We’ve got more theories and hare-brained ideas than the average fly tyer, most won’t hold water so we wander around the fly shop sighing heavily, and then go home and make it ourselves. For us, 2 x 2″ is an appetizer, and at those prices an expensive one. You’...
