The main principles behind the panoptic theory of power are constant visibility by the power holders and isolation of the main population. The Panopticon provided the perfect setting to implement this use of power, thus the term Panopticism. Inmates would be kept inside cells with light shining through allowing the guardian inside the central tower to constantly maintain watch over the inmates.

Provides the reader with insight into the subtle messages in Anthony Swofford’s writing. She analyzes the words through the prospective of a psychologist and provides a deeper meaning to every little phrase. There is a point in the essay when she talks about how the length and syntax of different phrases can mean a difference in the mental condition of Swofford. It is not a book.
