Tarting up a grey day | blind eye turned
https://dmerrett.wordpress.com/2014/03/16/tarting-up-a-grey-day
Doug's window on the world. March 16, 2014. Tarting up a grey day. I’ve always maintained that in Nova Scotia, February is the longest month but not too long ago March was known as hungry March, long-legged March (starve-gutted April and up May hill) and the storm we just had was called a “lambkiller”. Of course since my daughter didn’t have appropriate gear for the weather I got to offer her a garish combination of blue and orange, which was dutifully accentuated by the filters! March 16, 2014.

February | 2012 | Wide Awake
https://sputnki.wordpress.com/2012/02
Trying to keep my eyes open. Random musings about me. Reduce, rethink and renew. February 9, 2012. One blog to bind them. I’ve had two blog’s for a few years now. One sort of general (this one) and one more devoted to photography. I’ve ignored them both greatly in the past three or four years but now feel it’s time to change that. It is my much neglected photo blog. Way back when I had the crazy notion of putting a more professional face on my photography. Da creative process (10). Distraction no. 99.

Marathon Writing and the Abhorrent Void | Wide Awake
https://sputnki.wordpress.com/2009/11/01/marathon-writing-and-the-abhorrent-void
Trying to keep my eyes open. Random musings about me. The road to Utnapishtim. Marathon Writing and the Abhorrent Void. November 1, 2009. Nature abhors a vacuum. Perhaps that explains why I would sign up for NaNoWriMo. Until I had read the entry life seemed to be in its usual rut of non-writing. But the thought of spending the next month trying to write a 50,000 word novel, was compelling. Perhaps it would be a way to correct the writing imbalance plaguing my blog? Is that what drives people to write?

Trying to keep my eyes open. Random musings about me. The road to Utnapishtim. February 26, 2009. I’m not sure how long ago it was I last posted. I know I could look it up, but viscerally it spans relationships, jobs and homes. Mar 03, 2009. Well, although it sounds like you’ve had some ups and downs, a pleasure to find you back on your blog… I check once in awhile. Hope you find your blog, or someplace else, a good outlet for your writing instinct. All the best and welcome back! Jan 12, 2010. On Reduce,...

Trying to keep my eyes open. Random musings about me. What am I doing? July 4, 2006. The storm took away the mast, sails, punctured the hull and filled her with water. The hapless photographer stuck with his craft until the end, then launched the life raft. Now the only land for hundreds of miles (and not shown on his charts, of course) is just visible in the setting sun. The currents are taking him away from it, where else can he go? May 22, 2011. Trying to keep my eyes open. Random musings about me. January 2, 2007. I know Christmas is done, past, let’s move on. But I couldn’t resist this bizarre, surreal, wonderful story. This is how traditions are started. See this link for the story of the traditional goat burning. As a followup, apparently this year the town council was able to find a fire-retardant chemical that was waterproof…. December 21, 2006. What does this have to do with writing, or not writing? But with time, the mind and body become...

Trying to keep my eyes open. Random musings about me. Star Trek in the Amazon. August 7, 2007. It all started when I was in the city learning how to scuba dive. It’s one of those things I’ve always wanted to learn and I was just about done. Since my car at the time was ‘a bit dodgy’ my partner brought me in hers, then went off with her mum on a road trip. By the time I had gotten back to the surface, she had bought a boat. Uh-oh, that meant I was the expert! Then when I was in college my father had picke...

Trying to keep my eyes open. Random musings about me. Star Trek in the Amazon. July 5, 2007. There are seven countries in South America that still have indigenous people having had little to no contact with the outside world. Of Brazil are (or rather, were) trained in first-contact, the idea being to reduce the impact of modern civilization on them as well as the impact of loggers and miners who often enter these remote regions in force. Prime Directive for the Last Americans. So is exposing a culture th...

Trying to keep my eyes open. Random musings about me. Marathon Writing and the Abhorrent Void. The road to Utnapishtim. March 21, 2009. The irony is that it was Enkidu’s friend Gilgamesh who underwent the journey, to find Utnapishtim and immortality, after the death of Enkidu. In essence he gave up on his life in order to pursue everlasting life, to get the secret, the ‘how’ which the gods granted him after he saved humanity from the Deluge. But I remember as a young boy being very idealistic, everything...

Trying to keep my eyes open. Random musings about me. Marathon Writing and the Abhorrent Void. Reduce, rethink and renew. January 10, 2010. There is a certain something binding people together. It isn’t contained in a stack of procedures or laid out in a court of law. We naturally do things because a loved one needs us to, or just to settle with our internal sense of what’s right. Mar 22, 2010. Nice to see you writing here…. And I know what you mean about little kindnesses… I should do more! You are comm...

Speaking Natalie
1 To speak another's idiosyncratic dialect of English. 2 To understand/ appreciate who that person is. Thursday, January 28, 2016. The Talhoffer Society, and On Killing. I just finished The Talhoffer Society. This will not be a review as such, although I will write one of those later (probably somewhere else, where it will be seen by more people, although I may do a more personal friends-and-family review here). I will say that it has been a good long while since I have read a book that is excellent.

Just another WordPress.com site. April 3, 2013. Great reflections on Lokey GSB Conference. Mills’ all-day conference Creating Shared Value and Evaluating Impact. Looked at measuring the impact of socially-conscious ventures. Investors need to gauge return on such programs yet how do you assess progress on initiatives that require huge timelines? How do you quantify the results of human conflict or emotional deficit? Tackling human impact ultimately requires a human approach. March 4, 2010. Much has been ...
