It was also the day I really appreciated the weight of ammunition and it is really really heavy! One foot at a time. February 18, 2016. Like swimmers at the starting block. Tuesday was the day of the giant land snail. We were using barrier cream on our hands to try and protect them from the roughness of combing through the litter. Going to check all our traps the following morning the wind was very very strong I thought I was going to be blown off the side of the mountain. Rain, rain, go away, come again another day. February 18, 2016. March 2, 2016. Wednesday well it rained a lot. So we were confined to inside tasks which constituted sorting gear, cleaning snail shells and interpreting the tracking tunnels which was kind of cool because we got a lot of prints. Friends of Flora - About Us. The Flora Stream area of Kahurangi National Park is situated at an average elevation of approximately 800 metres. The northern flanks of Mount Arthur 1795m and the southern flanks of Mounts Lodestone and Hodder feed the catchment area. Silver, Red and Black Beech (Nothofagus species) are the dominant canopy trees. Along the Flora Stream other common species are Olearia cheesemanii, Melicytus ramiflorus (mahoe), Coprosma grandifolia and several hebe species. Kiwi - Sandy Toy.

Friends of Flora - Whio Project. One of the original aims of Friends of Flora was the re-establishment of a sustainable breeding population of Whio in the Flora Stream. This involved reducing stoat numbers to low levels so that juvenile Whio could be released into the stream. The female DOC translocated into the Flora partnered up with a wild male in 2007 and they fledged 3 young whio. We are now leaving the whio population within the catchment to their own devices, allowing nature to take its course.
