Lawrence FitzGerald: Post Office
http://lawfitzg.blogspot.com/2011/09/post-office.html
Thursday, September 1, 2011. Charles Bukowski's first novel, published in 1971. I liked it. John Martin of Black Sparrow Press. Offered Bukowski, at that time noted more for poetry than prose, $100/month to quit the post office and write full time. As poetry did (and does) not sell, Bukowski wrote Post Office. Which is a fictional account of Bukowski's life from the early 1950's to 1969 when he quit the post office once and for all. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). There was an error in this gadget.

Lawrence FitzGerald: Dark Places (2009) Gillian Flynn
http://lawfitzg.blogspot.com/2012/02/dark-places-2009-gillian-flynn.html
Tuesday, February 7, 2012. Dark Places (2009) Gillian Flynn. Abandoned on page 114 out of 345 and it BROKE MY HEART. First of all, Gillian Flynn and I share some roots and I am predisposed to LIKE her work. I LIKED her first book, Sharp Objects. I LIKED the story idea. There was a lot a really stupid stuff going on during the Satanic Panic: recovered memories, corrupted child testimony, and the almost complete abandonment of good sense. This was going to be a GREAT read! And here is her picture.

Lawrence FitzGerald: The Naked and the Damned

The Naked and the Damned. The Naked and the Damned. Two worlds spoke to one another. Crude images raster scanned, symbols, color images, audio. Genetic sequences. I don't want to stay here anymore," the young woman said. She had auburn hair with red highlights, high cheekbones, light blue eyes and pale, white skin. It's your home." The caregiver was astonished at the young woman's restlessness. This can never be my home.". She has the gift of language and language is the divide.". Hello," Gary said.

Lawrence FitzGerald: April 2011
http://lawfitzg.blogspot.com/2011_04_01_archive.html
Tuesday, April 19, 2011. Amazon books and Google books. They let me read snippets. I like reading the first few pages; they tell me whether the author can write; it's important to know. Go to Amazon and:. Read the first paragraph of Places in the Dark by Thomas H Cook. Read the first six pages of Kiss Me, Judas by Will Christopher Baer. The first paragraph of The Big Sleep by Raymond Chandler (utterly brilliant - you could sustain an academic thesis on it). For those first few pages. Sex absolutely makes...

Lawrence FitzGerald: The Bridge in the Jungle
http://lawfitzg.blogspot.com/2011/08/bridge-in-jungle.html
Monday, August 29, 2011. The Bridge in the Jungle. Written by the mysterious B. Traven as a short story and serialized in 1927, subsequently published in a longer book form in 1929. I had been trolling the used book stores looking for The Treasure of the Sierra Madre. 1927) also by Traven and came upon this for $2. I took a chance. I could not but help seeing in The Bridge in the Jungle. He did it pretty well. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). There was an error in this gadget. The Naked and the Damned.

Lawrence FitzGerald: Whats It All About, Johnny Bone?
http://lawfitzg.blogspot.com/p/whats-it-all-about-johnny-bone.html
Whats It All About, Johnny Bone? What's It All About, Johnny Bone? August 17, 1965. Willow Springs, Texas. It was early, so the Hut was nearly empty. Jim Reeves crooned "Adios Amigo" on the jukebox. Alma Parker sat at the table nearest the dance floor. She was twenty-eight, slender, with a modest bosom, a narrow waist and sultry hips. She wore her brown hair in a sun-lightened ponytail. Alma looked him up and down and settled her hard brown eyes on his boots. "What are those damn things, snake skin?

Lawrence FitzGerald: Lightspeed
http://lawfitzg.blogspot.com/p/lightspeed.html
Where the hell have you been? You're late." Deuce riffled the cards one last time and began to deal. Had a date." Herman "Buck" Scofield took a seat at the table. "What's the buy in? What do you mean 'What's the buy-in? Trevor sat to the right of Deuce. Trevor had his black hair slicked into a high pompadour. "The buy-in is a hundred. It was a hundred last week; it was a hundred last month. Hell, it was a hundred last year. 'What's the buy-in? So, who was your date? Yeah" The Duke broke into a broad grin.
