DePaolo's World: October 2014
http://daviddepaolo.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Thoughts and impressions on workers' compensation and life. Friday, October 31, 2014. Not Ready to Die. Regular readers of this blog know that Mom is 90, has moderate stage dementia, and lives in a very nice memory care facility. Fortunately because I'm the boss, I get to visit Mom a couple of times per week. And it's my duty, really, since I'm trustee and Dad entrusted me with making sure Mom is well taken care of after his death. The charge nurse gave me her status and treatment plan. She also advi...

Thoughts and impressions on workers' compensation and life. Friday, July 31, 2015. Angry At The System. An interesting observation was made by David Hanscom, MD, in the WorkCompCentral webinar. On Tuesday, "We're Beating Back Opioids - Now What? But more importantly in my mind is that Dr. Hanscom is an advocate in NOT performing surgery. His book, " Back in Control. This is a poignant, and from my observations, an accurate assessment. They are mad at delays, denials, disruptions. There is no outlet f...

Thoughts and impressions on workers' compensation and life. Thursday, May 21, 2015. Motorcycles, Italy and Comp. This is my last blog post until after June 3. I'm going on vacation. Leaving on a jet plane with my son to ride motorcycles in the Tuscany region of Italy. Interestingly enough, there was an article in Business Insider. The other day on how teenagers can convince their fathers (and they were adamant to ask Dad, not Mom.) to permit motorcycle ownership. I don't think it gets better. So he came ...

Thoughts and impressions on workers' compensation and life. Tuesday, June 30, 2015. John Swan, Director of Sales and Marketing for DocuCents. Flew home with me early Saturday morning from the Summer California Applicants' Attorneys Association conference. We had a dinner meeting the night before and of course drank more wine than reasonable people should - but this was Vegas. Swan passed out at about 5,000 feet en route to our cruise altitude of 8,500. He awoke momentarily a couple of times, but othe...

DePaolo's World: April 2015
http://daviddepaolo.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Thoughts and impressions on workers' compensation and life. Thursday, April 30, 2015. Former president George W. Bush infamously said. In 2005, “See, in my line of work you got to keep repeating things over and over and over again for the truth to sink in, to kind of catapult the propaganda.”. Opt-out supporters and proponents repeat over and over again that opt-out is better for employees. They forgot to tell that to Rachel Jenkins. Three hours late on a phone call and Jenkins is on her own. Seeking dec...

DePaolo's World: December 2014

Thoughts and impressions on workers' compensation and life. Tuesday, December 23, 2014. Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. Filed a workers compensation claim. Cause he felt that his red nose. Was mostly from the work it came. All of the other reindeer. Laughed at him and called him names. They made fun of poor Rudolph. So held his head in shame. Then one foggy Christmas Eve. Santa called to say. Rudolph I deny your claim. I am not the one to blame. Rudolph took Santa to court. Santa’s insurance company.

Thoughts and impressions on workers' compensation and life. Wednesday, November 26, 2014. Risk Sensitivity and Dangerous Neigborhoods. At the heart of workers' compensation, or any insurance based program for that matter, is risk management. Risk management entails understanding the fundamentals of a process or system, exploring the possibilities of an event interfering with that process or system, then implementing strategies or preparations to mitigate any negative outcome should such an event occur.

Thoughts and impressions on workers' compensation and life. Monday, August 31, 2015. But my experience with TBI didn't stop there, because I was an "active child" (okay, hyperactive, but at least my parents didn't put me on Ritalin, like my brother). There were a couple more minor episodes of head trauma as I grew up but nothing notable, until law school. That one hurt, right on the back of the head. Later that same first year of law school I was surfing Zuma Beach before class - it was going off! I sat ...
