Life in Oakland, California. Thursday, July 4, 2013. My friend Susan and I have become regular visitors to Skyline Ranch. I call it the "poop store" which may be why Susan's husband, Matt, calls us the "Poop Sisters.". I'm using it to help improve and condition the dense, impenetrable clay muck that is called "soil" at my house. I know it won't be a great all-around fertilizer, but it does seem to aid in breaking up those giant clods. ( Gardens Alive! Has a helpful overview. Welcome to Oakland, California.

Leftovers from an ancient plumbing project can be surprisingly useful. It took some fiddling around to make the pieces fit together, but I had enough extra joiners and fittings to waste. Life in Oakland, California. Saturday, April 25, 2015. Abbey of New Clairvaux Reconstructed Chapter House. As long as you're going to the Central Valley to see the wintering birds. You may as well keep on driving to the Abbey of New Clairvaux. In Vina. There you can check out the reconstruction of the chapter house that William Randolf Hearst took away from the Santa María de Óliva Monastery in Spain. You may even taste the wine the monks produce. A most lovely part of Spain. It's an interesting story.

Monday, June 17, 2013. I know I promised to show more of the Alcatraz comic book illustrations, but once again I've been tardy. Here is the page that shows one of the escaped prisoners washed up at Fort Point in San Francisco. He did survive (for details you'll have to buy the book :). The main challenge here is that this is a true nocturne. He probably arrived here after 9 PM in December. Quite dark. So I used a bit of license with the phosphorescence of the waves. Monday, April 20, 2015. Plein Air in Monterey. I just got back from the Plein Air convention in Monterey last weekend, and wanted to share some of the paintings I did while there. At the end of every day, the entire group went out to paint. Day 1 was Asilomar, Day 2 found us at Lover's Point, and the third day we were at the beach in Carmel.
