New Digs: Fracking and the Continued Effect of Rachel Carson’s Writing on Environmental Activism. Do you want milk? Which is a remarkable question in jail, said Sandra Steingraber at a talk in the Alvin O. Kuhn Library’s 7. Floor on Monday April 29. At University of Maryland Baltimore County. The talk had been delayed twice: once from the snow storm we didn’t have as Steigraber said. The second time was because Steingraber was in jail. Fracking is the DDT of our age. It is Ubiquitous and heavily prom...

Crunch Time | Through the Inkwell

The Blog of S. Brown. March 15, 2015. So, my novel is whole. I’ve written it from beginning to end. You know what that means? I’ve been revising is since the winter, and I’m in my second round of revisions. It’s actually going smoothly, compared to writing the first draft. Thankfully there’s no major issues with plot or the main characters. It’s the little details. And in a 300 page novel, there can be a lot of little things. But I’m adjusting them. About S. Brown. The Blog of S. Brown. Importance of Self-Care for Writers. April 15, 2016. I don’t see this get addressed a whole lot, so here’s my two cents on the matter on what helps me. You’ve just typed the ending of your novel. Regardless of whether it’s your first or sixth, congratulations! Your determination has guided you through frustrating nights and many cups of coffee or tea. Now comes the editing phase. These days it can be difficult to balance work with self-care. We tend to prioritize how productive ...
Symbolic Charge in the Tarot | EsoTarot

Symbolic Charge in the Tarot. To this notion of positive vs. negative cards, even if it’s not particularly clear-cut. In many esoteric situations in which symbols are put into one of two opposite categories, I would call this “polarity” (such as in Geomancy. Three of Swords (Sorrow). Five of Wands (Strife). Five of Cups (Disappointment). Five of Swords (Defeat). Five of Disks (Worry). Seven of Swords (Futility). Seven of Disks (Failure). Nine of Swords (Cruelty). Ten of Swords (Ruin). Nine of Disks (Gain).

The Blog of S. Brown. April 4, 2015. My thesis novel for my MFA program is due next week, so I have been working like a mad fiend. The words are beginning to blur together, so after Easter, I’m going to throw it at my fiancé and see what they have to say about it before sending it in. It’s the little things that can make all the difference.Writing:. About S. Brown. Writer of fantasy. Resides with her husband and two cats. View all posts by S. Brown ». Leave a Reply Cancel reply. Connemara & Kylemore | Through the Inkwell
https://throughtheinkwell.wordpress.com/2015/08/11/connemara-kylemore
The Blog of S. Brown. August 11, 2015. It’s a bit hard to believe that two months ago I was in Ireland. My spouse and I went there for our honeymoon, along with a visit to London. We’d visited both places several years ago, shortly before we started dating. So we decided to return there for a longer visit. It gave us the chance to explore the sites we’d missed before. Definitely one of my favorite places. About S. Brown. Writer of fantasy. Resides with her husband and two cats. Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Reflections on a Table | Through the Inkwell
https://throughtheinkwell.wordpress.com/2016/04/06/reflections-on-a-table
The Blog of S. Brown. Reflections on a Table. April 6, 2016. Getting a bit personal here. The table is a good sixty years old. Beneath it’s edges, there are scratch marks and some scribbled names, from my mother and her siblings. I inherited it back in September. My spouse and I were newly settled in our house but had yet to find a table for the small dining room. I had just gotten a rather dull temp position and my spouse recently began his internship for his doctoral degree, so money is tight. I accept...

The Blog of S. Brown. Author Archives: S. Brown. About S. Brown. Writer of fantasy. Resides with her husband and two cats. Adventures to the North. July 5, 2016. This still feels surreal. I much prefer the north, though Universal Studios was a delight. It’s certain that I’ll at least tear up once we finally clear out our current place. It’s a good house and has treated us well. I hope it’s next family will be kind. My spouse and I have talked about where we eventually want to settle down. We do want ...

Through the Inkwell | The Blog of S. Brown | Page 2
https://throughtheinkwell.wordpress.com/page/2
The Blog of S. Brown. September 27, 2014. First draft is officially complete. It clocks in at 318 pages. I’m expecting that number to change as I revise. There are some world-building kinks to smooth out, technical stuff, and fine-tuning the secondary characters. But the base is solid, the plot is solid, and I’m actually kind of pleased with where things are as I begin the revisions. Now to just get rid of all those filter words. Real Psychos: The Beast of the Ukraine. May 16, 2014. The man was brutal.

The Blog of S. Brown. Adventures to the North. July 5, 2016. This still feels surreal. My spouse accepted a position up north in Maine, so we’ll be moving there at the end of August. Everyone says wonderful things about Maine, and I have always wanted to see it. Now I’m currently in the process of finding a new place up there (apparently not that easy, especially when moving with pets) and tying down some movers. I much prefer the north, though Universal Studios was a delight. About S. Brown. Writer of f...

The Blog of S. Brown. May 7, 2016. While rereading my novel for another batch of edits, I came to an unfortunate conclusion. I’m no longer happy with my current first chapter. It’s not surprising, really. A professor in my writing program mention that your original first chapter is very unlikely to remain by the time the novel is complete. It’s a fine balance. About S.
