Ramblings of a newly qualified PPL pilot in the UK. Skip to primary content. Trying to keep track of and understand the different rules and regulations about pilot licencing can be quite difficult. So I’ve written up some notes on my understanding of some common issues in the hope that this will be of help to others. The usual disclaimers apply – do your own research and don’t rely on anything written here as accurate, up-to-date or complete. How EASA FCL affects a JAR-PPL Private Pilot. Do you know if t...

Ramblings of a newly qualified PPL pilot in the UK. Skip to primary content. IFR Ferry Flight from Coventry to Gloucester. February 5, 2017. Thin cloud layer near Coventry. Cruise Flight at 2000 feet above the cloud. Shortly I was able to climb up through the cloud layer and enjoy the sunshine in glorious VMC on top at 2000 feet. The flight was going OK, my cruise checks reported everything was in order and I couldn’t see a problem. Safely parked up at Gloucester. I think this may have been the first tim...

Ramblings of a newly qualified PPL pilot in the UK. Skip to primary content. Skip to secondary content. February 18, 2017. Low Cloud but warm and (not too) windy. Low cloudbase of 900 feet (broken 600) at Gloucester meant there was very little activity. It was forecast to clear during the afternoon, and the weather looked better to the west, so I picked on Caernarfon as a destination for a day trip in the TB20. Dave, who I’ve flown with at Lyneham came along for the ride. Scattered Cloud in Wales. The ol...

Ramblings of a newly qualified PPL pilot in the UK. Skip to primary content. May 2, 2016. I planned a long Bank Holiday weekend in Northern Scotland, visiting two different sets of friends near Inverness and Wick. Both were separately happy with the idea of a local flight in return for board and lodging. My wife was interested in coming along too, so I booked our TB20 at Gloucester and kept a close eye on the weather forecast. I filed IFR direct to Inverness at FL100 using the marvellous Autorouter.

Ramblings of a newly qualified PPL pilot in the UK. Skip to primary content. West Wales business trip. January 31, 2017. Mixing Business with Pleasure. Gloucester (EGBJ) to Aberporth (EGFA). While I could see the ground at all times, visibility was more limited in some directions but I was able to pick out the runway very easily and had plenty of time to compensate for the crosswind to make quite a decent landing. I appeared to be the only movement onsite that morning. Aberporth (EGFA) to Llanbedr (EGFD).
