Donna Smith Designs: August 2014

http://donnasmithdesigns.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Tuesday, 5 August 2014. I tend to find I sew more in the summer and knit more in the winter. I have of course been knitting a little bit but certainly not as much as I would like. In the summer evenings, if I get a chance, I like to sit in the conservatory listening to the radio and watching the sunset and hopefully do something creative. I wasn't sure what I would think of elastic around the neck but I like it. The armholes were supposed to be finished with elastic too but I just made an ordinary hem.

Donna Smith Designs: June 2015

http://donnasmithdesigns.blogspot.com/2015_06_01_archive.html

Sunday, 28 June 2015. Taatit Rugs - An Exhibition. The latest exhibition at the Gadderie in the Shetland Museum and Archives. Focusses on Taatit rugs that were once made and used in Shetland for bedcoverings. It is the outcome of two years of extensive research by Dr Carol Christiansen and covers items from the 18th to the 20th centuries. It is very exciting to see a textile based exhibition and I spent some time there a couple of weeks ago. The woven base (ground) in three natural colours. It was origin...

Donna Smith Designs: Peerie Baa-ble Hat

http://donnasmithdesigns.blogspot.com/2015/05/peerie-baa-ble-hat.html

Friday, 22 May 2015. For those of you who don't know "Peerie" is a Shetland word meaning "little". I recently knitted a peerie version of the Baa-ble hat, the official free Shetland Wool Week pattern (you can get the pattern from here. I basically followed the pattern using Shetland jumper weight yarn from ten different colours from my stash (which is equivalent to fingering weight), except I only knitted 10 rows of rib using two colours rather than the turned up brim. OR Jamieson's of Shetland. Knitting...

Donna Smith Designs: January 2015

http://donnasmithdesigns.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Saturday, 31 January 2015. I recently finished a new pair of mittens, just in time for the wintery weather. We haven't had much snow here in Shetland but we have had a lot of gales and it has generally been colder. These mittens are Polar Star mittens. Designed by Outi Kater. I could have just worn them as they were when I cast them off, but Shetland yarn (as does most wool projects) really does benefit from washing and blocking, or dressing as we say in Shetland. But for now have a good weekend! There a...

Donna Smith Designs: A few Baa-ble hats

http://donnasmithdesigns.blogspot.com/2015/05/a-few-baa-ble-hats.html

Friday, 1 May 2015. A few Baa-ble hats. It is wonderful to see lots of you knitting the Baa-ble hat, the free pattern I designed for Shetland Wool Week 2015. It is also very exciting to see you using different colours, making them unique and I wanted to share a few that I have seen on Ravelry and Instragram for some inspiration! You can see more photos of each version by clicking on the knitter's name - it will link you to their Ravely page. I love the turquoise sky in Ribbels' version. As well as gettin...

Still Baa-bling on…. October 13, 2016. I think I have now just about recovered from Shetland Wool Week although it has taken a while! This year Ella Gordon. 8216;s lovely Crofthoose hat. Was the official hat for the event; last year it was the Baa-ble hat and I still often get asked where to get it. It can be downloaded from Ravelry. For a small fee (the pattern was free while it was the official hat). You can find those instructions here. But remember – it is. Different sizes of Baa-ble hats. All I can ...
