Stepping up to the plate for the love of food
The Chopping Block: December 2010
http://dontgetchopped.blogspot.com/2010_12_01_archive.html
Stepping up to the plate for the love of food. Monday, December 20, 2010. Slowly but surely, I'm feeling better. I spent the majority of the weekend resting so that I would walk into class today revived. I'm not completely restored, but I do feel a helluva lot better than I did last week. Thank God for Z-Pak, muscle relaxants and 800 mg Motrin. Oh, and comfort food. Friday marked the last day of garde manger; today, I re-entered poissonnier. I worked on the cod dish, which features chorizo, clams coo...
The Chopping Block: August 2011
http://dontgetchopped.blogspot.com/2011_08_01_archive.html
Stepping up to the plate for the love of food. Tuesday, August 23, 2011. Thursday, I purchased a last-minute plane ticket to Ohio for a family reunion. Friday, my flight was cancelled. Saturday, my rebooked flight departed for Cleveland. Sunday, I spent the day at the reunion. Monday, I returned to New York. Who can say no to my mom's ribs, walking tacos (non-Midwesterners, please Google this), and loads of sides? I sure can't. I ate two heirloom tomato slices for good measure. 1/2 sweet onion, diced.
The Chopping Block: July 2011
http://dontgetchopped.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html
Stepping up to the plate for the love of food. Sunday, July 17, 2011. I remember the first time I ate squash blossoms. Ryan and I were in a small, outdoor café in Italy enjoying lunch after a long, hot day of being a tourist. It was late May 2008—our first big vacation post-honeymoon—and we ate everything in sight. (FYI: Not much has changed from the way we conduct ourselves now on vacation.). Lucky for me (and you, too! Tuesday, July 5, 2011. I have garlic breath. Some might consider this a bit of a pro...
The Chopping Block: September 2011
http://dontgetchopped.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html
Stepping up to the plate for the love of food. Thursday, September 29, 2011. I'm not much of a sweet person. On any given day, I'd rather dig my fork into a big bowl of noodles than eat a slice of cake. Every once in awhile, though, I crave something sugar-laden—and it's usually after dinner. This summer, the fruit was so amazing at the farmer's markets, it inspired me to make dessert. So here I was, baking sour cherry and almond bread,. A blueberry-lavender crumble,. And two fig and franginpane tarts.
The Chopping Block: November 2010

Stepping up to the plate for the love of food. Tuesday, November 30, 2010. Home for the Holiday. Days 85-90 and Everything in Between. In case you're wondering—I'm still alive. I'm also happy that it's over, which is why I celebrated tonight with some culinary school friends at Wondee Siam. A Thai classmate and friend took us to the amazing restaurant in Midtown. She says it's the closest food to home in New York. As if that wasn't enough, my mom and I made my uncle's Polish sausage the next day. I'v...

Gracious Goodness: Let them eat cake!
http://graciousgoodnessblog.blogspot.com/2011/02/let-them-eat-cake.html
Thursday, February 3, 2011. Let them eat cake! Everything in moderation.including moderation! So, we've already discussed how I have a little bit of an over-celebration problem and the birthday cake that I made for my friend Meagan's 24th birthday last weekend is a PERFECT example. Making cakes for my friends has become a tradition with me, but I will openly admit that I went a little bit overboard on this one. But hey, everyone loves a little extravagance on their birthday! It is truly sinful. Served wi...

Friday, October 12, 2012. A New Friend and a New Adventure. Natasha and me at our first entertaining class at 1818 Farms. I ran into Natasha at a party at the Huntsville Museum of Art shortly after. When we began talking and planning, the only thing I could think was, "Why am I just now meeting this person? Natasha is one of those people that you know could throw a gorgeous dinner party and give an i.v. to a sheep, both with astounding levels of grace and confidence. It is kind of unbelievable. Thursday, November 11, 2010. My Twist on Julia Child's TARTE AUX POMMES. It is so beautifully arranged on the plate- you know someone's fingers have been all over it.". Here's a tip: Do one apple at a time. I made the mistake of cleaning (quartering, coring, and peeling) all of my apples at once for the sake of a good blog photo and had to go to extra measures to prevent browning. Gracious Goodness: Millie's Iron Skillet Apple Pie
http://graciousgoodnessblog.blogspot.com/2011/04/millies-iron-skillet-apple-pie.html
Thursday, April 14, 2011. Millie's Iron Skillet Apple Pie. Comfort me with apples." - The Song of Solomon 2:5. Many great cooks will tell you that almost everything is better when made in a cast iron skillet. Not having much experience with one myself (other than making cornbread) I asked for one for Christmas. To my surprise, Mama gave me her very own Martin cast iron skillet, which apparently are very hard to come by these days. Now, I don't know about everything. This is a must-try recipe!
