Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog: April 2015
http://petermooreblog.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog. Monday, 27 April 2015. If you had told me at the start of April that I could add Great Blue Heron. Two Reed Warblers (#162) were singing close together in a small reedbed on Studland. After some verbal jousting, they came together and became locked in mortal combat. The bird on the left established its superiority, almost drowning the bird on the right. The dominant bird flew off, leaving this one battered - but still alive. Sunday, 26 April 2015. Little Ringed Plover (#159).
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog: July 2014
http://petermooreblog.blogspot.com/2014_07_01_archive.html
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog. Sunday, 27 July 2014. The view from the window of our holiday accommodation in Northumberland this week: Red Squirrel. But eventually he's had enough of these which is when the questions start. Yesterday, on the long journey up to Northumberland, where we are just starting a week's holiday, he announced 'I want to ask some. I want to know'. Questions'. 'Is there any other kind of question? I replied. 'Yes, there are 'I want to know if. Q 'Where are we going? The rules of Chee...
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog: October 2014
http://petermooreblog.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog. Friday, 31 October 2014. I was on holiday on the Isles of Scilly when Britain's first Eastern Crowned Warbler was found in Co Durham in 2009, and was disinclined to follow the example of one well known twitcher who left the islands immediately to see it. The second record for the country was identified after the event a few years later, having been pulled out a ringer's net in Hertfordshire and released, never to be seen again. A close up showing the pale median crown stripe.
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog: August 2014
http://petermooreblog.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog. Monday, 25 August 2014. Sea creatures great and small. This time last year I found my sea legs and did three pelagics out of the Isles of Scilly. A single Great Shearwater swung around the stern of the MV Sapphire before heading out to sea again. A very elegant bird. Far commoner in the waters around our coast is the Manx Shearwater - these two were photographed from the deck of Scillonian III on the way over. This one was mixing it in among the gulls at the back of the boat.
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog: December 2014
http://petermooreblog.blogspot.com/2014_12_01_archive.html
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog. Wednesday, 31 December 2014. 2014: retrospection and introspection. So that's it then, another year gone, and what to show for it? Bridled Tern: Bird of the Year? Eastern Crowned Warbler, Cleveland, October. 3rd record for Britain. Oh go on then, for Auld Lang Syne: Northern Harrier/Marsh Hawk, Portland, April. Which caused a stir among lepidopterists. Painted Lady, aberrant form. Short-toed Eagle, Morden Bog: bird of the year for many, and not just in Dorset. The first I hav...
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog: May 2015

Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog. Sunday, 31 May 2015. Http:/ petermooreblog.blogspot.co.uk/2015/05/also-at-bempton.html. Saturday, 30 May 2015. For some reason I can't think about Monty's Harrier without being reminded of a famously sweary line from Withnail and I. This doesn't happen very often, as they have become a very rare breeding bird in Britain, having started off being not very plentiful in the first place. After an early start from Dorset. Male Montagu's Harrier, Blacktoft Sands. Marsh Harrier and ...
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog: A harrowing twitch

Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog. Saturday, 20 June 2015. Cretzschmar's Bunting, Bardsey Island - a monster bird and my 200th species photographed in Britain in 2015. The White eye-ring, dark rusty orange underparts and throat patch, and lead grey head and upper breast distinguish Cretzschmar's from the closely related Ortolan. The Ctretzschmar's fed on seeds among the concrete pads around the lighthouse. A more substantial bird that the local Linnets as this picture shows. Silence. It was broken by Andy ...
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog: That's more like it
http://petermooreblog.blogspot.com/2015/06/thats-more-like-it.html
Peter Moore's Wildlife Blog. Thursday, 18 June 2015. That's more like it. Even when I see a new bird these days I get quite frustrated if I don't get a half-decent photograph of it. Half-decent is about as much as could be expected of the Pagham Harbour Hudsonian Whimbrel. Hudsonian Whimbrel, Pagham Harbour. Preening to reveal the dark rump. Catching the evening light nicely here. Hudsonian Whimbrel (right) with Eurasian Whimbrel (left). It took over an hour before I got the opportunity for a flight shot.
