I'm an artist, a book binder, a gardener and a teacher. well, a mixture of all those things, and some others, in different proportions at different times and here I blog about all of them. Welcome!
Double Elephant: Sleepy tired
http://doubleelephant.blogspot.com/2012/09/sleepy-tired.html
Seeing, making, doing art. Saturday, September 29, 2012. Instead we interspersed the wine tasting with cheese tasting and a visit to a cider farm, and had a lovely drive through the local national park. I've never visited that part of the country before and it was lovely: lots of huge granite outcrops (unsurprisingly) and fields full of vines or apple trees in bloom. But then, wine isn't my business, nor can I claim a tax rebate on tastings for "professional development" reasons. It was great to meet thr...
Double Elephant: Remember...
http://doubleelephant.blogspot.com/2012/09/remember.html
Seeing, making, doing art. Monday, September 03, 2012. That's right, I used to blog here! I've been away, not because I don't love you all, but because the combination of six jobs and Blogger taking a dislike to my operating system (yes, Google, that's you I'm talking about) made blogging a bit tricky. Now I've dropped one job and upgraded my operating system, so not only does Google like me slightly more now, but I have the odd 5 minutes of free time. What have I been doing? Love those snowflakes - very...
Double Elephant: Jewels in Winter
http://doubleelephant.blogspot.com/2012/07/jewels-in-winter.html
Seeing, making, doing art. Saturday, July 07, 2012. Aseroe Rubra emerging from the palm mulch. The fruiting body "hatches". I love the translucent jelly with the spiralling membranes! Apparently the brown slime smells like rotten flesh. Flies are attracted to it and spread the spores. I like the fact that it adds colour in the winter garden. Since I don't put my nose up next to them I haven't noticed the alleged stink, and they don't harm the surrounding plants. I can almost smell them from here! Al Muta...
Double Elephant: al Mutanabbi Street - it's hard to squash ideas
http://doubleelephant.blogspot.com/2012/09/al-mutanabbi-street-its-hard-to-squash.html
Seeing, making, doing art. Sunday, September 23, 2012. Al Mutanabbi Street - it's hard to squash ideas. You'll have noticed I'm a bit grumpy at the moment. Losing a job you enjoy does that to you, I find. But today I was reminded by email that as ever, my troubles pale into insignificance compared to the misery many other people suffer. I'm working on books for the Al-Mutanabi Street project. What do you do in the face of stupidity? Labels: Al Mutanabbi Street project. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

Tuesday, January 25, 2011. The Lookout: November 2009
http://lookout31.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html
Great house : small budget : big ideas. Tuesday, November 24, 2009. MORE progress. We went up there on Sunday morning, once I'd collected dearest husband from the airport, and to our astonishment we found two utes up there, with one person fixing cladding panels on the rear wall of the office/studio where we'd had to move a window, and another inside doing the waterproof membrane in the bathroom! Talk about dedication to the cause; fantastic! Because it costs a lot more! Seems to have had an effect!
Rhubarb & Ella: June 2011
http://rhubarbandella.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html
Monday, June 20, 2011. Darling daughter has been ferrying her music between piano lessons, violin lessons and choir in a succession of grotty plastic bags for ages, and they fall apart easily when pointy book corners poke through the plastic! We decided that action was necessary and a couple of weekends ago we spent a pleasant (if cold.) afternoon on the verandah felting this bag. Anyway, with a bit of effort it seems to have worked! Mostly Up: [sigh]
http://mostlyup.blogspot.com/2009/08/sigh.html
The artistic pursuit of happiness. Monday, August 17, 2009. It seems to have succeeded. Whether I am delusional about this I don't know but I'm feeling positive and optimistic about it, and that for me is a sea-change. So there you go. Mostly Up has mostly gone now, and although I probably won't consign it to deletion hell yet, I am unlikely to post to it now. If you want to follow what I'm up to, try. Which is about my art,. Which will be about building our house, or. Posted by Sara Bowen.
Mostly Up: March 2009
http://mostlyup.blogspot.com/2009_03_01_archive.html
The artistic pursuit of happiness. Tuesday, March 31, 2009. Not enough quotations recently, so here are some more that I've been reading:. Seeking happiness outside ourselves is like waiting for sunshine in a cave facing north. Or a cave facing south, for those of us in the Southern Hemisphere.). One must practice the things which produce happiness, since if that is present we have everything and if it is absent we do everything in order to have it. Jean-Jacques Rousseau, French philosopher. By the time ...

Thursday, January 20, 2011. The end of the week. The children in my craft workshops have worked SOOOOOOO hard this week! I'm particularly impressed with their dedication to learning to knit. Here are the three baby owls who joined Wolly and Bob. I'll be teaching again on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week and spending the next couple of days plotting new craft activities to keep them amused! Have a great weekend. Labels: Bob the Bird. Wednesday, January 19, 2011. A bucket of paper pulp to start!
Rhubarb & Ella: April 2012
http://rhubarbandella.blogspot.com/2012_04_01_archive.html
Saturday, April 7, 2012. Egyptology for the Barbie generation? Then by popular demand we went to work on Ancient Egypt, and boy have we had fun! We've painted pyramids, looked at what Ancient Egyptians might have had in their houses, read books on the excavation of Tutankamun's tomb and tackled the exciting world of mummification! And so it came to pass that we needed a volunteer to become a mummy (or three), and the concensus was that Barbie dolls would be perfect thing! And finally the Barbies were imm...

Rhubarb & Ella: Fabric
http://rhubarbandella.blogspot.com/2012/02/fabric.html
Friday, February 3, 2012. New fabric from Bloom Fabrics. I was looking for needlecord to do a dressmaking project with Little Bird (we're making a skirt! From the top: two photographs of the lovely fabric for making bookcloth (would also be great for making bags and accessories), a photo of the lovely pink/red printed needlecord which will make a fabulous short kick-pleated skirt, and a photo of the cotton bird print that's going to make the P-Js.
