Can you believe?: Home
http://johanpdx.blogspot.com/2015/07/home.html
Published every Thursday (mostly). Last year, I returned to Stuttgart for the first time in 48 years. After that long, my ties to the city as a whole didn't feel strong. And as I recounted. Last year, the house we lived in had been torn down and replaced by high-end condominiums. But one of the owners was willing to let me look over her back veranda. There was the garden where my sister Ellen and I gathered plums. That. Place tugged at my heart. On Quaker community: a dose of humility? Isn't there a bett...
Can you believe?: Quakers' best-fit market
http://johanpdx.blogspot.com/2015/07/quakers-best-fit-market.html
Published every Thursday (mostly). I've always resisted the idea that Friends faith and practice are for special people. Since we welcome anyone who yearns to live with Jesus at the center of the community and learn with the rest of us how to live that way (including its ethical consequences), there is no limit on what "kinds" of people - sophisticated or unsophisticated (who's to say! Calm or emotional, of whatever race or nation or culture or even religion - could potentially feel at home among us.
Can you believe?: a 50th birthday
http://johanpdx.blogspot.com/2005/06/50th-birthday.htm
Published every Thursday (mostly). Today, June 30, is Ellen Maurer's fiftieth birthday. A year ago I posted my article " On losing a sister to murder. 8212;I don't want to repeat those sentiments now, I just want to remind the world that she really did exist. But in any case, how could she have anticipated such a devastating response from her mother? In mid-March 1970, she disappeared from ISPI. I got a call from her on my birthday, March 23, but she didn't reveal her location. On the 28th, my fa...It re...
Can you believe?: Heroes, true and false
http://johanpdx.blogspot.com/2014/09/heroes-true-and-false.html
Published every Thursday (mostly). Heroes, true and false. Poster by Sally Wern Comport; this copy. Found at Friends Community Church in Fresno. Read Micah Bales on " Who Are the Heroes? Micah contrasts the world's expectations of a hero with the hallmarks of true heroism. Micah's essay is positive and useful. Forgive me for presenting a slightly sour counterpoint: what are the hallmarks of false heroism? False heroism builds community through shared enemy lists. You're considered "sound" if you say ...
Can you believe?: Stuttgart shorts
http://johanpdx.blogspot.com/2014/06/stuttgart-shorts.html
Published every Thursday (mostly). My grandparents' home, probably 1963. I spent two of my preschool years in Stuttgart, Germany, and then revisited my grandparents' home there three times- the last time in 1966 at age 13. I've not been back, until now. There's an important connection between my grandparents and Russia: the money that came to me when my grandmother died was enough to finance the remainder of my college education in Soviet area studies, leaving me debt-free, and also funded my first trip ...
Can you believe?: Genius of the cello

Incoherence and confusion. ( Source. Based on authoritarianism and identity politics are common, it's worth thinking about what "looking for friends" really means. Can you believe?: More on prayer
http://johanpdx.blogspot.com/2010/11/more-on-prayer.html
Published every Thursday (mostly). We worshiped on the. Last week I wrote about some of my experiments in prayer, and was grateful to get several kind responses- some posted on the comments section, and some sent to me privately. One of the latter responses kindly reminded me that I was really only covering one type of prayer- intercessory. This prayer is (as Anthony Bloom and others point out) a compact catechism of Christian belief as well as a full-spectrum prayer. It also has elements of adoration.
Can you believe?: How the Grinch stole Hiroshima (repost)

Published every Thursday (mostly). How the Grinch stole Hiroshima (repost). These are my reflections from ten years ago on the atomic bombing of Hiroshima. For comments at the time, see the original post. It is the season. For Hiroshima and Nagasaki observances, and once again I will not take part. That was my last Hiroshima memorial meeting. I now prefer to keep my mourning private (excepting, maybe, this weblog entry). Years ago, Dale Aukerman wrote an amazing book,. My priority is the Lamb's War. ...

Set up a train of thoughts that can't wait until next Thursday to depart the station. Briefly:. Would ask the Catholic church to stop talking about Jesus and Mary and the Bible. Paradoxically, who we are. Is a people of hospitality and tender ears. This is precisely why some of our meetings and churches receive people who have allergies and grievances, or who are by nature ske...

The Observatory | a blog by Doug Bennett, President Emeritus of Earlham College
A blog by Doug Bennett, President Emeritus of Earlham College. Susan Collins’s Ever-So Pleasant World. March 22, 2018. I had a column in yesterday’s Brunswick Times Record about the (to me) strange silence of our Senior Senator while our republic continues its plunge into constitutional crisis. Here’s the text:. I wish I lived in Susan Collins’s world. It’s much more pleasant than mine. Susan Collins, for what I can see, wakes up to a world that needs to focus on celebrating the 106. No, it is the silenc...

Quantum Science, Life and Spirit
Quantum Science, Life and Spirit. Understanding our world, living in connection. Quantum Science, Life and Spirit. What if you knew that you were a force for good in the universe? What if you could like your life feeling good most of the time? What if you were really a force of nature? Would you do things differently? Fides et Ratio
Thursday, March 3, 2016. The Modal Third Way. Among other arguments I've defended in favor of classical theism, I have also defended a Thomistic modal argument inspired by Robert Maydole. Let's first define two terms:. Something necessary is something that exists and cannot possibly-not exist. Something contingent is something that possibly exists and possibly does not exist. Contingency should not be conflated with "dependency.". Here is the argument:. 1 Something presently exists. (Premise). 2 If an or...
