Confessions of a Traveling Music Teacher: October 2014
http://douggoodkin.blogspot.com/2014_10_01_archive.html
Confessions of a Traveling Music Teacher. Reflections teaching Orff workshops around the world. Friday, October 31, 2014. 8220;Bad behavior is often a symptom of bad teaching.” This popped out of my mouth in a recent workshop and of course, teachers have enough on their plate and don’t need to be blamed for children’s rudeness. And yet. When the activities are engaging and hit children where they live and give them what they need, bad behavior mysteriously evaporates. Edagogy. Teaching is 90% intuiti...

Confessions of a Traveling Music Teacher. Reflections teaching Orff workshops around the world. Wednesday, December 31, 2014. The Wheels on the Bus. Someday I hope to write a book The Wit and Wisdom of Children’s Songs. 8220;Oh, the wheels of the bus go round and round, round and round, round and round…”. People, it doesn’t get any better than that! And then the perpetual turn of the years at The San Francisco School. This Fall marking my 40. And my wife’s 41. We also taught various family workshops at S...

Confessions of a Traveling Music Teacher. Reflections teaching Orff workshops around the world. Sunday, May 31, 2015. Worst City in the World. I’m talking about San Francisco. This morning I gave the real picture the postcards don’t show—bone-chilling fog in May! But there’s more bad news. Shouldn’t be too hard.” An hour and circling an ever-expanding radius of blocks proved me wrong. Of course, two different times I spotted a place and so did the car in front of me. So people, pay attention. Terribl...

Confessions of a Traveling Music Teacher. Reflections teaching Orff workshops around the world. Monday, September 29, 2014. News From the Brain Stem. Has anyone noticed how National Enquirer has become the norm? Didn’t they read “The Boy Who Cried Wolf? 8221; How are we supposed to know when something actually is serious enough to warrant a powerful adjective? Like this news that I discovered:. Don’t tell anyone. That’s my intimate secret.). AOL news, get the F (pick one of the four) out of my face!
Confessions of a Traveling Music Teacher: "Yee-Haw!!" Allowance
http://douggoodkin.blogspot.com/2015/05/yee-haw-allowance.html
Confessions of a Traveling Music Teacher. Reflections teaching Orff workshops around the world. Wednesday, May 20, 2015. I love teaching contra dance to kids. Line them up in two lines, sit down with my banjo and sing some play party songs that tell them what to do…”Bow, bow, bow Belinda…Swing your partner, oh Belinda…Do-di-do, oh Belinda…" Etc. Today I did this with 2. Prize for the best couple! Prize for the most improved! And yet still some kids (would it surprise you that they were “boys? And so out ...

Motifs in Music: January 2014
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014_01_01_archive.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Monday, January 27, 2014. Homework Assignments - Hmmmm! I can't believe that I haven't done this sooner, but in my string classes I have sent home three homework assignments this year - two for the beginners, one for the second-year players. Of course, we all expect our students to practice, and some of them do. Actually, many of them do. But what exactly do they practice? So, three weeks ago, I handed out a page that said something like this:. Subscribe...
Motifs in Music: June 2014
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014_06_01_archive.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Tuesday, June 24, 2014. On Facebook I found a link to a series of lessons on fiddling, and the first lesson on Bile 'Em Cabbage Down is free. You can find it here. Like Orff, it uses a simple song and then adds variation upon variation with some room for improvisation and creation. Like Fiddle Camp, it teaches the song by ear. Well, that's like Suzuki, too. It also throws in some chord theory. Sunday, June 22, 2014. Catching Up and Fiddle Camp. Interesti...

Motifs in Music: Elna Claire Valine
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014/08/elna-claire-valine.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Monday, August 25, 2014. A thousand years ago when I was in 4th grade, I started playing the violin in the school program. My teacher was Elna Claire Valine, and I just found out that she passed on last week. After a long career in music. She taught in the Wichita Public Schools for 33 years and was the principal second violinist for the Wichita Symphony. She probably never knew that I grew up to be a string teacher in the public schools.
Motifs in Music: German Christmas Carols
http://musicmotifs.blogspot.com/2014/12/german-christmas-carols.html
Thoughts on composing, playing and teaching music. Monday, December 15, 2014. We went to a concert of Benjamin Britten's A Ceremony of Carols. This past weekend. Not only did we get to hear the lovely piece in an old church, but after the presentation the audience got to sing along with the women's choir some Christmas Carols. Some I knew pretty darn well - O Come, All Ye Faithful, Joy to the World. And even Stille Nacht. But there were two in German that I did not know, so I can add them to my repertoire.

What few people realize is that underneath a creative’s calm, thoughtful exterior, lurks a beast. A beast born out of a passion for what we do.
