James S. Douglas. The first family to live in the Douglas-Williams House was that of James Stewart “Jimmy Rawhide” Douglas, the son of Dr. James Douglas for whom the town is named. Dr Douglas practiced several professions but was most successful as inventor of an electrolytic copper process and consulting engineer. The latter job brought him to southern Arizona, where he participated in development of Phelps Dodge Corp. (PD) copper operations. James S. followed him into the business. Ben F Williams Sr.

Special Displays and Events. Currently in the “One Object, One Person’s Story” display is a solid copper cigarette holder. It was donated by Stewart Robinson, whose father, Eugene, received it in 1906 as a delegate to Arizona’s Territorial Republican and Democratic conventions held in Bisbee. In 1909, copper company executive James S. “Jimmy Rawhide” Douglas engaged the Arizona Architectural and Construction Co. to build a house for him. It was constructed in the still-new town in Arizona’s southeast corner where two copper smelters stood.
