Downtown Art: March 2008
http://downtownartblog.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html
Thinking on theater, young artists, community, and the Lower East Side. Thursday, March 13, 2008. Looking back - looking forward. I was extremely proud of the art work we had created and supported… but there was a disturbing gap between the makeup of our audience and the makeup of our community. What helped me pull myself up with a mental image of some tough little bootstraps, was, as it often is, the young members of our company. I am their leader. That is my job. I have a responsibility to them. Was I going to mope around in front of them? Share my bout of hopelessness? Well we don't h...

Thinking on theater, young artists, community, and the Lower East Side. Sunday, May 11, 2008. April 25, 2008. And they weren’t very old. Just past their teens. Sometimes in their teens. Given history, I think we have to ask ourselves… How is it so easy to dismiss young people? How is it so easy to decide that they can’t have the issues right? Why do we allow ourselves to assume that wisdom comes from age? That clarity must be informed by years, by experience? When to risk unreasonable. hope. Hopelessness...
