Jan 26, 2016. How to fetch Github organization repos and their pagination. Quick intro to streams. Building an API with Streams. The rest of Github.ResultStream. How to install Elixir with asdf. This post is based on Drew Olson. Since I’m just getting started with Elixir. I came across a few issues understanding the Building an API with Streams. Section in Drew’s post. This post is my attempt at breaking it down while learning about Elixir. The code for the main example is up on Github. This is a long an...
The Value of Explicitness
https://blog.drewolson.org/the-value-of-explicitness
The Value of Explicitness. The building blocks of Elixir applications are straightforward; modules, functions and macros. Modules are simply a namespaced bucket where functions or macros are defined. Defmodule Foo do def add(a, b) do a b end end. We can call functions in a module by qualifying the function with the module name. Fooadd(1, 2) # = 3. This is true within other modules as well. Defmodule Bar do def add(a, b, c) do x = Foo.add(a, b) Foo.add(x, c) end end Bar.add(1, 2, 3) # = 6. By providing of...
Building an Elixir Web App
https://blog.drewolson.org/building-an-elixir-web-app
Building an Elixir Web App. Over the past few months I've been building a small internal application at work. I've been using Elixir. And it's been an absolute blast. I thought it would be useful to put together a "lessons leared" blog post about the techniques I've found helpful using these tools to build a database-backed web app. This post is not intended as an introducion to any of the these tools. I assume some knowledge of Elixir, Ecto and Phoenix. Pipelines are your friend. S which are a series of.

I previously wrote about explicitness in Elixir. One of my favorite ways the language embraces explicitness is in its distinction between eager and lazy operations on ». Composable Queries with Ecto. An Empathetic Functional Language
https://blog.drewolson.org/an-empathetic-functional-language
An Empathetic Functional Language. I've been writing Elixir code for over a year. Never have I been more excited about the prospects of the language and its community. The language is young but very promising. Many smart people are getting involved. There's a hell of a trajectory here for a language that released 1.0 merely 6 months ago. This empathy is demonstrated in a variety of ways. Many have been extensively discussed: the natural syntax. The extraordinarily involved creator. After this, I created ...
Composable Queries with Ecto
https://blog.drewolson.org/composable-queries-ecto
Composable Queries with Ecto. In my previous post. I briefly covered some lessons I'd learned while building a (kind of real) web app in Elixir. Today, I'd like to take an in-depth look at composable queries in Ecto. First, a brief introduction to Ecto. Defmodule MyApp.Post do use Ecto.Model import Ecto.Query schema "posts" do field :body, :string field :published, :boolean field :published at, :datetime field :title, :string has many :comments, MyApp.Comment end end. Select all published posts. MyAppRep...

Pagination with Phoenix & Ecto
https://blog.drewolson.org/pagination-with-phoenix-ecto
Pagination with Phoenix and Ecto. I've been working on a web application built in Elixir. I'm using Phoenix. As the web framework and Ecto. To talk to my database. As the amount of data in the application grew, I needed to paginate some of the views. I wasn't able to find an existing pagination solution for these tools so I ended up building my own. This post will discuss what I built. Let's assume we have a post model. Let's also assume we have an Ecto repository. Key (defaulting to 1) and the. Defmodul...

The Science behind our life! Monday, November 28, 2011. So we have been trying to sell our house, well sorta of trying to sell. Seeing that it was during the final weeks of classes, we all had various other endeavors that made it difficult for us. See what kinds of responses we would have gotten from taking pictures. Also, while not technically a resource per se, Emily thought being located in Chicago played a big role in our project. Having...
