A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet: Double the Fun
http://cowdoc1981.blogspot.com/2013/12/double-fun.html
A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet. Thursday, December 5, 2013. As with every surgery, the cow is sedated, clipped, sterile scrubbed and blocked (numbed) with Lidocaine. Luckily I had enough help with these two C-sections, we were able to have a photographer. So this is a post of pictures! I'll explain what we are doing where needed. Both surgeries went very smoothly and there were two happy, BIG, healthy girls born! Opening the skin and muscle layers of the cow. The hole the calf just came out of. The new a...

A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet. Wednesday, June 26, 2013. 8220;I think I have a cow with Rabies.” A phone call you DON’T want to get on a beautiful Sunday morning. This past weekend, I unfortunately did get this call. Cow #2980 had been found down in the manure alley in the morning. When asked to get up, the owner described how she had no control of her legs, her bladder, was “walking crazy ,” and appeared aggressive. I’ve talked about cow flight zones in a previous post. Each cow has a differe...Younger...

A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet: "An apple a day....."
http://cowdoc1981.blogspot.com/2013/10/an-apple-day.html
A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet. Wednesday, October 9, 2013. An apple a day.". Fall in the Northeast is probably my favorite time of year. The red, orange, yellow and gold colors are abundant and make the scenery even more beautiful than it already is. Dunkin Donuts has pumpkin donuts, pumpkin coffee and pumpkin muffins and the fresh apple cider can’t be beat! Along with the fresh cider is an abundance of fresh apples to make pies, apple crisp, applesauce… and the list of my favorites goes on. As I’...

A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet: July 2013
http://cowdoc1981.blogspot.com/2013_07_01_archive.html
A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet. Wednesday, July 31, 2013. So here it is, the last day of the month and I’ve realized I have only written one post all month. What a slacker! Actually, we have been swamped at the clinic and to be honest when I get home at night, there’s not much energy left to write… Unfortunately, this is one of those “boring” posts with only one picture, but this is what I have been up to for the last few weeks:. Rabies Vaccine, Respiratory Vaccine and Official ID. So, why all the fuss?

A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet: November 2013

A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet. Friday, November 22, 2013. In vet school there is always at least one class that you just don’t seem to comprehend, no matter how hard you study, or talk through it with classmates or stare at the pages of the textbook. For me, one of those classes (there were actually a couple for me…) was pathology. Pathology is by definition the “condition and processes of disease.”. We started learning pathology 2. In general practice, I have performed multiple necropsies, but not near...

A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet: April 2013
http://cowdoc1981.blogspot.com/2013_04_01_archive.html
A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet. Thursday, April 18, 2013. Vegetative Endocarditis with a side of Pericarditis. Before I start this post, I would encourage anyone who does NOT have a warped sense of appropriate dinner conversations, like many in the medical field, to not consume ANYTHING while reading this one… You have been warned. I was asked to perform a necropsy (animal autopsy) on a dry cow at one of my herd checks the other day. This cow was a middle aged cow that had been dried off a month ago.

A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet. Thursday, March 28, 2013. Bloody Noses and Fevers. I’ve been working on a case for the last couple weeks on a farm that seems to be having some respiratory issues. The milkers have noticed several cows that have come into the milking parlor with bloody noses. One cow was described as having a “foul smell” to the nasal discharge while the others seem to be more just blood tinged mucous. I hope by now, you’ve all learned to not eat while you are reading my posts…. So upon ph...

A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet: The Changing Face of D.V.M.

A Day in the Life of a Cow Vet. Thursday, November 7, 2013. The Changing Face of D.V.M. I went to one of my old high school football play-off games a couple weeks ago. As we were sitting on the bleachers wrapped in blankets, with our winter coats and gloves on, my grandmother turns to me and says; “You are really slacking on the blog posts these days aren’t ya? 8221; Touche Gram, Touche. Well here is my defense…. I recently attended one at the Sagamore Resort in Lake George, NY. Whenever drug companies o...
