Looking for excuses to ride…. September 10, 2012. Wildlife and the wild life. I’ve been on the path to recovery but this cold has been sticking around. First, I couldn’t shake the cough. Then, I’m pretty sure I’ve pulled a muscle, torn some cartilage or cracked a rib from all that coughing. That has been slow to heal. It doesn’t hurt when I’m upright and riding but if I cough or twist or exert too much force… Ouch! We saw a few deer on the trail and had a good time catching up. Last, but not least, IR...

Looking for excuses to ride…. October 17, 2012. Too little too much. Riding and taking a picture? View from the top! Lovin’ the view! Photo Credits to the amazing Andy! For as long as I can remember, I've always enjoyed zipping around on two wheels. I'm a casual rider - I commute by bicycle when I can, I love hitting the trails with friends, I try to roll most of my errands. I'm learning more about Des Moines' trail and cycling culture - and now I'm sharing that with you! View all posts by dsmcyclist.

Kitchen Table Friends: August 2012
http://kitchentablefriends.blogspot.com/2012_08_01_archive.html
Thursday, August 30, 2012. About a month ago, I actually found it. A FOOD DEHYDRATOR! It was $6 at a Salvation Army in the Iowa City area. I regret that I didn't celebrate sufficiently by running through the streets with my "As Seen on TV" American Harvester Snackmaster food dehydrator from the 1990's. But I was pretty excited to find it. Sadly, I didn't get a chance to experiment with it until Friday night. The peaches are a pretty addition to our front yard. I suggested we try them in the dehydrator!

Tuesday, September 25, 2012. The Squash Soup Experiment Continues! Shout out to my Mom for bringing me a nice butternut squash! This is Butternut with a butternut. Do you know how hard it is to pose your cat with a vegetable? Here is another, very slightly different (mainly different in technique with a few more details than the previous). Recipe, for squash soup. 1 Butternut squash, halved, peeled and seasoned with olive oil and about 2 T garam masala and roasted at 425 for about 30-45 minutes. Has 2 ho...

Wednesday, June 20, 2012. Cooking with Garlic Scapes. This summer is the first time I've ever cooked with garlic scapes. They are everywhere at the farmer's market right now and I've been cooking with them all week. Here are some ideas for using garlic scapes with some of our kitchen table favorites:. Chop up one or two scapes with your Kale Pesto. Instead of garlic. Spread over fresh grilled zucchini and sprinkle with paremesan cheese. Add to egg dishes, like quiche or Allison's frittata. Barley salad w...

Kitchen Table Friends: A couple of coleslaws
http://kitchentablefriends.blogspot.com/2013/05/a-couple-of-coleslaws.html
Tuesday, May 21, 2013. A couple of coleslaws. I'm not sure what the rules are for considering something coleslaw. When I was a kid it came from KFC and was ignored in its sad little Styrofoam cup. Now, I think of it as a salad that it is featured in many magazines and episodes of Chopped. To me coleslaw consists of crunchy veggies mixed with just the right amount of sauce (the veggies must be recognizable in taste and texture and covered but not dripping in sauce). I think it's delicious! 2 or 3 T mayo.

Kitchen Table Friends: January 2013
http://kitchentablefriends.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Tuesday, January 22, 2013. Sunday brought unexpected snow and sub zero temperatures, so leaving the house to go do my regular grocery trip wasn't gonna happen. When dinner time rolled around I scrounged the fridge for ingredients I could throw together. I found. Half of a red pepper (already chopped. bonus! Some red onion (also already chopped. hooray! 1/3 bag of baby spinach. Luckily a quick search of the pantry yielded one can of white beans! I was in luck. Here's what I did. 1-2 Cups chicken broth.

Kitchen Table Friends: July 2012
http://kitchentablefriends.blogspot.com/2012_07_01_archive.html
Monday, July 30, 2012. We set out early to make the scenic drive to St. Joseph Missouri. There weren't any closer orchards that had peaches ready to pick. We ended up at Schweizer Orchards. After a sweaty hour we realized that we had filled at least 4 baskets to overflowing and that we should stop. even though we were having fun. All told, we left he farm with roughly 30 pounds of delicious peaches. Our peach haul laid out on the table that evening. We made this amazing peach cobbler. While corn is great...

Kitchen Table Friends: November 2012
http://kitchentablefriends.blogspot.com/2012_11_01_archive.html
Wednesday, November 28, 2012. Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Rolls. It was Thanksgiving weekend and I was anxious to get my bake on. It had been a long time since I had some kitchen therapy - spending time preparing food. I feel like I've been in survival cooking mode throughout the fall, barely pausing from work to prep basic, easy meals. So over the long weekend I was in the mood to bake something that would take a good deal of time. Something I had to wait. And take good care of. Pumpkin Spice Cinnamon Rolls.

Kitchen Table Friends: The Most Important Meal of the Day
http://kitchentablefriends.blogspot.com/2013/02/the-most-important-meal-of-day.html
Thursday, February 21, 2013. The Most Important Meal of the Day. Cara, this post is dedicated to you, the true lover of breakfast. When I do take time to make something for breakfast other than cereal or oatmeal, it's usually waffles. Ryan and I got a waffle maker as a wedding gift, and I LOVE it. It's just a simple waffle maker like the one found here. Americans must have been sadly alienated from the kitchen for pancake mixes to ever have. Be it some multi-grain flour, fruit, or spice. 1/2 tsp. salt.
