The leader of the main group of the world's Franciscans has written members of his order around the world informing them that their financial stability is at "grave risk" because of "questionable financial activities" undertaken by staffers of the order's Roman administrative offices. Bro Carlos followed the signs that led to the Franciscans. September 9, 2013. Carlos Ona followed the signs. Now, at 38 and a Franciscan friar, Ona looks back and sees "there were so many signs God was directing me to this life. I just followed them.". Born in a small town in the Philippines, Ona was the youngest of six children. His mother Julita was very devout - "She would always drag us to the church." Big bucks didn't satisfy, so scientist opted for poverty. September 9, 2013. It began simply enough. Joachim Ostermann thought it would be a nice break when his Vancouver parish said a retreat was being held at Westminster Abbey. I had never been in a monastery before, he thought. I should check this out. I might like it. It might be a nice way to spend the weekend, so why not? But God had other plans for this PhD scientist. His life path did not start out this way though. Determining his life's course c...

Postulancy: The Journey So Far. Feb 2, 2014. It all began with a question from a Postulant, Why the heck aren’t you a Franciscan? All this leads me to ongoing and deeper discernment, which leads to openness, which leads to trust, which leads to Christ. As I desire to know Christ my Savior even more He continues to be my guide and is directing my path to walk in the footprints of St. Francis. I am thankful for this and the journey so far. St Francis, pray for me. Rovince of Christ the King.

Photograph by Bruce Edwards. Doubt as much a part of Easter as Faith. April 24th, 2011. EDMONTON - For Father David Norman, the holiest week in the Christian calendar is about doubt. Doubt is the flip side of faith, Norman says. Where there is no doubt, there is no faith. It’s an unconventional Easter message, but one that will surely resonate with many Edmontonians as they celebrate the death and resurrection of a first century Jew named Jesus, or simply look for dormant life under all that melted snow.

Franciscan brother opts for priesthood. May 26, 2014. Once again, Brother Joachim Ostermann came to a life-changing decision at a retreat. It was during that silence, that protective barrier against lifes distractions, that Ostermann decided, Yes, I want to be ordained. From that point on, I always felt, Yes, I want to be a priest. The trigger for priesthood came when someone remarked, What is my relation to the sacraments? What is God calling me to be in his Church? Do I not want to study? Its very acti...

Local Friar pleased with Vatican’s choice for next Pope. The newly appointed Pope Francis may be better suited to look at the issues currently facing the church, said Franciscan Friar Kevin Lynch, director of Mount St. Francis Retreat. All attention was on the Catholic Church March 19, as the new pope was inaugurated in the Vatican. Lynch said he’s encouraged by the pope’s choice of the name Francis. Lord, teach me to be generous. Mar 19, 2014. Hi, my name is JD and I am a Franciscan postulant. Being a postulant basically means that I am trying to figure out whether I am called to be a Franciscan. At the same time, the Franciscans are trying to figure out if they want to have me as part of their family. Tough questions both for me and the friars! But so far, it has been a good experience for all of us. If you read this and if you think that it all sounds pretty cool and if it’s something you want to give a try, then just do it!
