DuckRabbit: Hear, hear
http://duckrabbit.blogspot.com/2011/12/hear-hear.html
Philosophy, culture, philosophy of culture, and other stuff as needed. Sunday, December 04, 2011. Brian Leiter likes to pour scorn on the NY Times's philosophy blog The Stone. He really doesn't like Simon Critchley), but this post by Alva Noë. The idea that a person is a functioning assembly of brain cells and associated molecules is not something neuroscience has discovered. It is, rather, something it takes for granted. You are your brain. We need finally to break with the dogma that you are something ...

Philosophy, culture, philosophy of culture, and other stuff as needed. Saturday, May 26, 2012. Life before Amazon and Google. The new Eckart Förster book, which I ordered, and now here it is. Looks good, and in fact I may already report an interesting bit from it. Check this out (p. 13):. The original edition did not again become available until 1838 when the first complete edition of Kant's works was published—seven years after Hegel's death! But even the A-deduction alone is hugely informative about wh...

DuckRabbit: Cousin Victor [not really] fills us in
http://duckrabbit.blogspot.com/2012/02/cousin-victor-not-really-fills-us-in.html
Philosophy, culture, philosophy of culture, and other stuff as needed. Sunday, February 05, 2012. Cousin Victor [not really] fills us in. Victor Mair at Language Log. For those who might be curious, the German surname "Mair" derives from Middle High German meiger. How about that. I had often wondered where our family name came from. But why would you change your name from Maier to Mair when the former is so clearly superior [heh heh] in every way? I mean, really. Jackie of web design. Thanks, web design!
DuckRabbit: Monk in the land of churches
http://duckrabbit.blogspot.com/2007/12/monk-in-land-of-churches.html
Philosophy, culture, philosophy of culture, and other stuff as needed. Thursday, December 06, 2007. Monk in the land of churches. At Brain Scam, H. A. Monk takes on Paul Churchland. This is because the problem is with the "identity theory" itself, not what exactly the "material" relatum amounts to, with which the "qualia" are supposed to be identical. As Monk rightly sums up:. One might say: qualia are a suspect kind of entity anyway, so why should I need a theory to account for them? An explanation of "...

Words and Other Things. Trying to generate more light than heat since 2006. The fun will go on. April 8, 2009 in Uncategorized. The other talk at BelnapFest I wanted to say something about was Phil Kremer’s, titled “How Truth Behaves When There’s No Vicious Reference.” Before the talk, Kremer gave Belnap a little present. He showed us a .pdf of a partial academic genealogy. Revision Theory of Truth. The other revision theories did well. There was a further surprising result when McGee’s version...The dis...

Tractatus Blogico-Philosophicus
http://tractatusblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/6_8921.html
My plan is to post translations of and comments on Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Please feel free to comment. Tuesday, December 04, 2007. The world is, is completely indifferent for what is Higher. God does not disclose [or: manifest, reveal] himself in. What believer could accept this? God is not manifest in the world, and couldn’t care less what happens in it? Is this pure atheism, or a kind of philosophical theism taken to its limit? Tractatus Blogico-Philosophicus
http://tractatusblog.blogspot.com/2007/12/7-whereof-one-cannot-speak-thereof-one.html
My plan is to post translations of and comments on Ludwig Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus. Please feel free to comment. Wednesday, December 05, 2007. 7 Whereof one cannot speak, thereof one must be silent. And this tautology is what is so hard for the philosopher to accept. The goal of the book, it seems, is to lead one to acceptance, to peace. The TLP offers one method, the PI perhaps another. Or more than one. Yet see what Wittgenstein says about talking nonsense in the Lecture on Ethics.
A Virtualprimate: A ladder to the sky

Sunday, 4 October 2009. A ladder to the sky. He heard it said, ‘mind your left side, what is held tight will eventually go, what is let free will hold.’. But then one day, out of the blue vast empty sky, he spied a girl who could fly. And although the shade of the tree still blocked the heat of the sun and provided some degree of comfort, he all of a sudden wished he had built a ladder to the sky. Friday, 23 April 2010. Since pursuing a different field I have found that I achieve better results if I put in the minimal amount of my own understanding instead replicating as many resources that I can get my hands on putting them into different (some would argue their own) words. How is this a demonstration of academic merit or of grasping the subject? This, to me, makes very little sense. As for references. they should be relevant and reflect ones understanding right? Wednesday, 18 November 2009. The avoidance of suffering through the suppression of those things we wish for is to capitulate to unhappiness. To wish for things so ardently that we are unhappy when they are unfulfilled is to generate unhappiness. To follow our hopes and dreams knowing that they won't all be fulfilled is to accept.
