Thugs, bully-boys, psychopaths, sacked policemen, security guards, sacked security guards, racialists, Paki-bashers, queer-bashers, Chink-bashers, anybody-bashers, rear Admirals, queer admirals, Vice Admirals, fascists, neo-fascists, crypto-fascists, loyalists, neo-loyalists, crypto-loyalists. Do you think so? Is a pretty compelling read.

WASSUP? | Dowackado

June 21, 2012. Garry Wills, who is a smart man, is really mad at Roberto Unger. And others who are tempted to stray from the two-party system. All these brave independents say that there is not a dime’s worth of difference between the two parties, and claim they can start history over, with candidates suddenly become as good as they are themselves. What they do is give us the worst of evils. The Obama years have taught me (and I am slow to learn, though not as slow as some) that what binds the parties is...

Monthly Archives: February 2015. 8220;Like the Latin for fingernails”: Remembering Hesburgh. February 27, 2015. When it comes to the Catholic Church and the priesthood, to say that I am deeply conflicted does not begin to get at it. But reading this morning about the death, and the legacy, of Father Ted Hesburgh brought me to tears, and not for just a few seconds. I am still wiping them away. There are two good appreciations at the Post. And I am sure hundreds more to come. President Dwight D. Eisenh...

Not especially profound musings on farming | Dowackado

Not especially profound musings on farming. March 25, 2010. The thing about farming is this. You never really know if you’re doing it right. I found both of my donkeys dead in the trees yesterday. My guess is that they grazed something poisonous, most likely poison hemlock, which is everywhere in the early spring. Am I grazing the cows efficiently? I judge by how the pasture looks the following year. But is that nice clover growth a result of my clever grazing management, or just because we had an ex...

Monthly Archives: October 2014. Reflections on one’s team getting screwed by the refs. October 20, 2014. The talking about the penultimate play of the Notre Dame-Florida State game Saturday night will go on for years, decades. Like arguments about JFK assassination conspiracy theories, or about how the towers fell in 2001, pretty much nothing will be achieved by the endless back and forth, but that never stops the obsessed. Check any comments section in articles about this game. From South Bend sports ta...

Dead people who haven’t died yet, or Notes on the shameful sport of golf. September 24, 2012. Note: Re-publishing one of my most popular posts on its three-year anniversary. Sadly, the competition described herein did not become an annual event.]. Saturday I had whipped myself into a keen sense of anticipation to play in the first-ever competition between the place where I play golf and another place where people play golf. So … totally stoked! I drove home and watched golf and football on TV flat on my ...

The useless farmer in winter. February 11, 2010. I’m against keeping cows in barns. I don’t have a totally sound basis for this stance, but I feel strongly about it, for some reason. My 13 cows are outside all winter. That wasn’t a problem last year, but last year was a milder winter, the ice storm notwithstanding. I have nice hay for the calves, in square bales. The mamas much prefer the square bales to the big round ones I’ve set out for them, to the point where they pretty much ignore their ...General...

May 24, 2010. Dave Campbell, my best friend in the world, passed away Wednesday night. He was 50. I am still in shock. He had cancer but was responding terrifically to the chemo. I had just spoken to him a couple weeks earlier, and he was in good spirits and full of plans. Here is a very perceptive remembrance. From the Lucid Culture blog that focuses on his musical brilliance. The wedding scene from the Graduate (2:28-2:34). I could not stop grinning. I don’t think I’ll ever know. 8220;Tim … Becky.

Secrets, lies, and the threat posed by those sneaky, rug-making Persians. November 29, 2010. The Pentagon Papers are a thing of the distant past, and the New York Times isn’t exactly giving Julian Assange the Ellsberg treatment. In fact, it gave its war-adoring soldier fanboy reporter the assignment of penning a hatchet job on Assange. Including the secretary general of the UN. Credit card numbers! How low can you go? See, that didn’t hurt, did it? Pretty shocking, right? Three reporters cobbled together...
