The Duno - Anecdotes

Bernard constantly worked on the Duno, spending many hours making small adjustments, polishing, painting, cleaning, tuning the engine or just bailing out the bilge. During the winter months it stayed in its boathouse, but was hoisted up out of the water with pulleys and set on a temporary floor above the water line. The Duno - Modifications

Bernard constantly worked to maintain and upgrade the Duno. Most changes he made himself, although he did occasionally employ some help. In 1934 the original boathouse was no longer serviceable, so a new one was purchased for a cost of fl.2290.00 ($1431.00). It contained the same set-up with a full workshop for repairs. The Duno - The Hull

Once the Boathouse was ready, the actual work on the Duno could begin. The framework is starting to take shape with the stringers carefully created, clamped, glued and prepared to hold the mahogany planks. This brings us to the end of this history of a beautiful boat. The care and upkeep of the Duno became Bernards hobby for his entire life. Whenever he had the opportunity, he could be found in the Boathouse on De Kaag lake, just south of Amsterdam. He constantly tried to improve it, and once he became a Naval Architect, he always demanded the best for his favorite boat. It can occassionally be seen at vintage boat shows in France. The construction of the Duno was started in 1911. It was the dream of a young naval architect-to-be to build a wooden motor Runabout. As the son of a shipping company owner, he had a natural interest in the technical and scientific development of boatbuilding. Bernard was looking for the excitement of speed. But first he had to build a house in which to build the boat. So with the help of his 5 younger siblings he set to work. He named his craft the Duno - a name derived from the dunes of Holland.
