Dusty Rainbows

The title `Dusty Rainbows' comes from a song by my friend Chris Spence. The rainbows symbolise to me those dreams of stardom that any musician who picks up an instrument inevitably has when starting out. As the truth slowly takes hold through the process of trying to make these dreams a reality, they fade and are eventually filed away in an attic somewhere at the back of the mind. This blog is an attempt to dust a few of them off and share some of my experiences.

Dusty Rainbows: November 2008

http://dustyrainbows.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, 23 November 2008. What's Your Vibe Man? It's late November 1991, and I've been kicking around at a bit of a loose end drumming-wise since the demise of the Smugglers in the summer. There have been a couple of no- hope. Small ad' experiences I'm not anxious to repeat, and a couple of invitations from friends of friends, which while flattering, were not for me. I have got it into my head that it has to be something pretty big, as at 28 I ain't getting any younger. Was (no internet in them days mind!

Dusty Rainbows: Musical Epiphanies #1: Levitated in Paris

http://dustyrainbows.blogspot.com/2010/05/musical-epiphanies-1-levitated-in-paris.html

Wednesday, 5 May 2010. Musical Epiphanies #1: Levitated in Paris. The initial expectation on the music scene surrounding the band Levitation was enormous, featuring as they did indie-guitar maestro Terry Bickers fresh from great hopes the House Of Love. There were tales of pharmecutically induced money burning in the back of the tour bus before he was unceremoniously dumped at a train station to make his own way back to reality. However.something profound (and pretty beautiful? At the tail end of 1990 th...

Dusty Rainbows: October 2008

http://dustyrainbows.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 29 October 2008. Gonna Be A Man. I recently related a tale to Ben Wardle (after reading his excellent blog A&Rmchair www.benwardle.blogspot.com. About my own experiences with "the world's most argumentative band, and Europe's most stoned producer" and he strongly urged me to get writing a blog. Who's going to publish a book by me anyway and more to the point when would I ever have time to write it? Small doses I think I can deal with though. time will tell. Initially a trio, we started gigging...

Dusty Rainbows: November 2009

http://dustyrainbows.blogspot.com/2009_11_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 25 November 2009. The unforgivable deviation from the steady stream of rock'n'roll tales from the past, and indeed lack of entries of. It's all chopped together now and sounds amazing. I picked a weekend in September at random and Mark said "that's cool, I'm playing with Damo on the Friday". What better circumstances in which to meet up again and begin a weekend's recording with Mark Spybey than a Damo Suzuki gig? Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). View my complete profile. Dusty Rainbows: April 2009

http://dustyrainbows.blogspot.com/2009_04_01_archive.html

Wednesday, 22 April 2009. The Worst Day I Ever Spent In The Music Biz or Why Promo Videos Are The Work Of Satan. When I think about developments between the two eras of the 1970's and 1980's, perhaps the most marked `step forward' is the music promotional video. Standing around (there are no chairs, who do we think we are? For hours in a freezing warehouse with wet shoes, trousers and feet, no warmth and no food or drink: this is the life! I know making videos isn't easy, but there were whole hours where...

The Thoughts of a Poor Woodsman: September 2008

http://smilemoonwoodworks.blogspot.com/2008_09_01_archive.html

Tuesday, September 16, 2008. Card Display for JMcGuinness of Etsy. First off, I've got to admit that I'm particularly fond of the way this project came out. I know last week I was all about how cool I thought the Prayer Box. Had turned out, and I'm still very down with that, but I think this card display came out oh-so-much-cooler than its predecessor (which you can check out here. Jen's promised me she'll get me a shot of the card display in action at one of her next shows, which are going to be:. Follo...

Saturday, February 12, 2011. Let's just pretend, first of all, that I haven't been on a 21-month hiaitus from my presence here and skip right to the present day. Yes, I like that idea a lot. It avoids a lot of awkward questions which may or may not be answered in the next few posts anyway. What I need to share with you today is airships. You know, blimps, zeppelins, dirigibles, rubber cows, lighter-than-air. that. Design, build, and fly my own crudely designed and built airship, too? In the end, UConn is...

The Thoughts of a Poor Woodsman: May 2009

http://smilemoonwoodworks.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html

Wednesday, May 20, 2009. Mini-Journal: Fan Blade Commission (Pt. 1). Last summer, I stumbled into some commission work making ceiling fan blades for a company in New York City. It was a pretty nice bit of work to pick up, and it helped us buy our first tankful of heating oil for the cooler weather. Unfortunately, the economy soon turned crappy, and I had to reconcile myself to the fact that no more fan blade work was forthcoming. Connecticut Wood Group Hardwood Outlet - my favorite lumber shop! The Thoughts of a Poor Woodsman: January 2009

http://smilemoonwoodworks.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 22, 2009. It feels good just to get back in the saddle again, you know? Unfortunately, the answer to why I'd been gone for a month was that in my haste to meet demand for toy wooden swords. In any case, it's good to be in the workshop again! I've got some ideas for new products for my Etsy shop that I'd like to work on this weekend. Stay tuned. Tuesday, January 20, 2009. http://smilemoonwoodworks.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html

Sunday, November 30, 2008. Home from School and the Joys of Rocky Horror. Our oldest daughter came home from school for the weekend. At her school, there are a number of students who live far enough away that they can't go to their own homes for the Thanksgiving holiday, so we had one of them stay with us as well. She was very pleasant to have around and my lovely wife enjoyed having an extra daughter on hand, too. It's a Holiday Star Wooden Tea Light Candle Holder. They're for you - happy birthday!

The Thoughts of a Poor Woodsman: The $50 Sock

http://smilemoonwoodworks.blogspot.com/2009/03/50-sock.html

Saturday, March 28, 2009. I figured that the washing machine may have shut itself down due to an imbalanced load (not to mention a load that looked far to heavy for our basic residential unit), so I removed the pillow and attempted to restart it. Nothing but a loud hum coming from some indeterminate location. Crap. And I always have to smack my head and exclaim "Now, why the heck did I not think of that? Then I start in with the real fun stuff. I went through checking the electrical connections throu...

Sunday, April 19, 2009. Yoyos and a Case of the Nerves. Aye, such a weekend! I'm writing this right now from the Z Games Yo-Yo competition in Northampton, Massachusetts, where my two oldest boys are competing against some the best in the southern New England area. They've both attended similar competitions two times before, and I'd have to say they're fairly well seasoned at this by now. Nah If I had, we wouldn't be here today. Update: It turns out my oldest boy had a decent run of it today. Not a ch...

Meandering thoughts...

A chronicle of the universe's conspiracies against me. Frequent rants. Some nostalgia. The occasional gushing. Wednesday, February 14, 2018. This is not the post I was expecting or planning to write tonight. Till a friend texted "see you at 7", and confused me completely, because I thought we were meeting tomorrow. I scrolled up and realised I was the one who had suggested meeting today, except I know I meant Thursday, but whatevs, not like I had competing plans on either day. Someone who knew what to do?
