Monday, January 18, 2010. ADDING THICKENER TO NATURAL DYES. When dyes are directly applied to fabric a thickener should be mixed into the dyes to keep them from wicking. Sodium alginate a gum derived from seaweed is generally used for this purpose. The type of sodium alginate used depends on the fabric. Type H is a high viscosity, low solids content thickener. Friday, April 22, 2011. EASTER EGGS DYED NATURALLY, OF COURSE. When coloring eggs with natural dyestuffs, the eggs are cooked and colored at the same. Start the eggs covered with an inch of warm water and gradually raise the temperature, this keeps the eggs from cracking. Cook for about 20 minutes. Let the eggs cool down in the liquid. Wrap the eggs in onion skins and tie with string add 1 tbs white vinegar. The vinegar helps to keep the color on the eggs. The eggs can be over dyed for more complex colors.

Only 200 copies were printed in 1959, mine is No.194. Saffron (benibana); madder (akane); gardenia (kuchinashi). Fermented indigo (ai) balls. Red (sappan wood); olive, mountain peach (shibuki);. Black is betel nut palm (binro) and indigo (ai). Brown dye is gardenia (kuchinashi);. Red is sappan wood (suoh). Gray is cranes bill geranium (gennoshoko);.

The older ones were usually dyed in indigo or pigments. The images are usually auspicious ones: pine trees for long life, bamboo, cranes, ducks, butterflies, chrysanthemums, and various flowers.
