据资料统计，约 50% 70% 的网络故障与线缆有关系。 布线测试按照测试对象、工程流程和测试目的，可分为选型测试、进场测试、监理测试 / 随工测试、验收测试 / 第三方测试、诊断测试、维护性测试等。 而测试标准通常采用 TIA 568B 标准、ISO/IEC 11801-2002 标准。 在布线施工过程中，由于端接技巧和放线穿线技术差错等原因，会产生开路、短路、反接 / 交叉、跨接 / 错对和串扰等接线错误。 但需要注意的是由于 TDR的精度很难达到 2%，而且 NVP(额定传输速率)值不易准确测量，故通常采取忽略NVP 影响，对长度测量值加上 10% 余量的做法，根据所选择的测试模型不同，极限长度也稍有不同，这里就不做重述。 在 TIA 568B 中衰减已被定义为插入损耗。 反接的情况比较复杂，一种错误是一对线中的两根交叉，如 1 对应2，2 应对 1 ;另一种错误是跨接，如一端 1、2 对应到另一端的 3、6。 造成这样错误的原因有两种 一是线缆的一端使用了 T 568A 标准，而线缆的另一端使用了 T 568B 标准 ;二是在网络的实际应用中，有时需要使用跨接线(也叫交叉线)。
