Infinite Jest | Works in Progress

8216;We are all dying to give ourselves away to something, maybe. God or Satan, politics or grammar, topology or philately–the object seemed incidental to this will to give one-self away, utterly. To games or needles, to some other person. Something pathetic about it. A flight-from in the form of a plunging-into. Flight from exactly what? 8217; – David Foster Wallace, Infinite Jest, pg 900. 8217; Instead, there is the simple clarity of the created meaning. the internal evocation of emotion and feeling.

Here’s what I think. As often happens with things that really don’t have much to do with you, or are affecting only at a distance, through those that are close to you, I’ve been considering what I hope people say at my own funeral. Macabre, yes, but totally usual, I think. We don’t really say things like that anymore, these days, if we ever did. Maybe we didn’t. But language is powerful, and verbalizing things do make them real. So, what do I want them to say about me? Leave a Reply Cancel reply.

Don’t Hate. That it’s foolish–which are two different things. And the eternal cycle of rebirth. Islam demands a re...

Motes in the eye. Of course, it’s so much more. It is the seat of consciousness and reason, of love and belief, of humanity. Check out these images of neurons in the brain and the way they connect:. I found this somewhat extraordinary the first time I looked at these pictures side by side. To see that the universe, that collections of stars, galaxies and galaxy filaments. Mirror the structure of the brain, is astounding. Split a piece of wood; I am there. One Response to “motes in the eye”. I too have be...

The Man Behind the Curtain | Works in Progress
https://djpowell.wordpress.com/about
The Man Behind the Curtain. I grew up and went to school. In Charleston I became myself, loved books so much I majored in them, learned too much Latin, and found the friends I’d always looked for. These days, I spend time with those friends, taking in the world, while I use my English major to better wait tables until The Next Big Thing (TNBT, for short) which will occur any day now…. 2 Responses to “The Man Behind the Curtain”. 6 March 2008 at 10:46 am. 23 November 2009 at 9:10 pm.
