Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge. Northwest Missouri Eagles, Nov. 30-Dec. 3, 2005. During my work assignment in Kansas City earlier this year, I made the 90-mile drive to Squaw Creek National Wildlife Refuge in northwest Missouri in April. To my surprise I found that Squaw Creek was a place to find a concentration of bald eagles during the winter. My KC exile ended in August but I resolved to return in early December and check out the eagle action. Snow geese take off.

Eagles along the Missouri, February 6-7, 2008. Eagles at Ft. Randall. I've spent much of my life in South Dakota and never saw any eagles. I heard there were some wintering along the Missouri River so I decided to drive the 130 miles to Ft. Randall dam and see. The Randall Creek Recreation Area is to the south of Trailrace but I didn't see any eagles while driving through there. The Karl Mundt NWR is further south, but is closed during the winter to allow the eagles to roost in peace.

After Antarctica, most questioners seemed to be expecting something more exotic for a mid-winter destination than Burlington, Iowa. But the east coast of Iowa was my destination the weekend of the Super Bowl as I went in search of bald eagles. They weren't hard to find. The observation deck at Lock and Dam 18 near Burlington, IA was closed due to construction on the lock, but setting up on the road still gave a good view of many eagles passing overhead. As usual, I headed to the dams near Burlington and Keokuk (Iowa). The town in between, Fort Madison, has provided infrequent eagle views in the previous years, but this year it was the place to be.
