The Early Worm

Thursday, 9 July 2015. I have recently spent a lot of time at train stations. And not just for my weekly traversing. I have, for want of a better word, been loitering. At my local train station. Both day and night. Camera in hand? Yes I see what you may be thinking, but worry not! Although it had occurred to me on several occasions that the lights at the train station could be good for attracting moths, I'd never really tried mothing there. However when Caleb. Heading back the next night, there was even ...

The Early Worm: January 2015

http://www.earlywormbirder.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Friday, 30 January 2015. A Most Egrettable Day. Well certainly not regrettable! Up at the uncomfortable and undeniably cold time of 05:20 yesterday, saw me heading down to Kent for a days birding around the Dungeness area. With such an early start, the sun was barely starting to rise as we approached Lydd. A large white bird hovering along the roadside caught our eye, and revealed itself as we approached as a Barn Owl. oh, at last! Three lifers before ten, pretty good going wouldn't you say? Another stop...

Saturday, 13 December 2014. Wildlife Watching Supplies Neoprene Lens Cover Set. If you've invested in a lens it's important to protect it. The last thing you want to do is knock it and end up with a chip or a scratch. Neoprene covers are a great way to prevent this, they provide a soft padded covering for your lens. Wildlife Watching Supplies. You can choose from a range of different patterns/colours for your cover, mine is in Advantage Timber camouflage, and is reversible to be Olive Green. With lenses ...

The Early Worm: Grey Wagtails

http://www.earlywormbirder.blogspot.com/2015/05/grey-wagtails.html

Sunday, 3 May 2015. Regular readers (if there are any) of this blog will probably know by now, that I'm a big fan of Grey Wagtails. They've been an on and off photography project on my patch for well over a year now. And no, that's not just because there's nothing else to photograph in the park, that's almost, but not quite true. A pair of Pied Wagtails also joined them for this. Probably the closest the park will get to a Flycatcher this year. But a superb day out photographing. 3 May 2015 at 21:22.

The Early Worm: Wood You Believe It?

http://www.earlywormbirder.blogspot.com/2015/04/wood-you-believe-it.html

Saturday, 25 April 2015. Wood You Believe It? I do love Wanstead. A migrant hot-spot within walking distance, what's not to love? Sure, it's probably one of the high causes as to why my patch produces oh so little, but I really can't complain. It's like a second patch almost, but with the twist that it's actually quite good. Last year Wanstead got a Blyth's Reed Warbler, I got a Gadwall. You see what I'm getting at? The routine morning check of Twitter. After three hours of canopy staring, it's trill fin...

The Early Worm: Patching, It's More Than a Hobby

http://www.earlywormbirder.blogspot.com/2015/05/patching-its-more-than-hobby.html

Friday, 15 May 2015. Patching, It's More Than a Hobby. Today the patch was, to put it simply, good. No, I jest not, it was genuinely good. A morning visit around 9am, had nothing out of the ordinary, save the first Cygnet of the year. While walking through the old pitch and putt however, I heard a call I'd long awaited in the park, and looking up - as I'd clearly forgotten to do for so many springs and autumns previously- there it was, a Swallow! Patch lifer. I know, how! View my complete profile. I am p...

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2014_08_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Friday, 1 August 2014. What a 'Tern' out! On the 27th of July me and my Dad headed of to the Farne Islands for the first time. We were really excited as we have always wanted to go there. At around 11:30am we arrived at our hotel in Seahouses and more or less straight away we headed of to get a boat to the Farnes. Some of my birding adventures! Tuesday, 8 July 2014. Super Suprise at Saltholme. Usually every weekend we get up early to go birding, this weekend was no different but instead of birds we were looking for bikes. We got up early to go and watch the Tour de France as it was right at the bottom of my street. After it had finished we then started to head of to RSPB Saltholme. We went there because a Black Winged Pratincole. Grey Heron, Common Terns, a Reed Warbler. And quite a few Mallards. I turned to see a...

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : May 2015

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2015_05_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Monday, 18 May 2015. In the last couple of weeks I have been busy with exams and revising for them so I haven't been able to get out as much as I wanted to but thankfully this weekend we managed to get out. We decided we would have a visit to Wintersett Reservoir in hope of seeing the Lesser Scaup. Which had been present for several weeks. It is fitted with a red nasal saddle on its beak where you can see that it was tagged in Portugal! So it has come quite a way! It swam r...

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : January 2015

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2015_01_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Saturday, 31 January 2015. Nosterfield gets a visit from America! This afternoon me and my Dad were deciding on where to go for the rest of the afternoon. We couldn't decide where until a drake American Wigeon. Turned up at Nosterfield so we were straight over. As soon as we arrived some birders put us straight onto this awesome bird, it was a little distant but through the scope it looked awesome! It stuck out like a sore thumb from the other Wigeon. Fly over our car.

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : April 2015

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2015_04_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Thursday, 9 April 2015. Swillington, Spurn and a Sweet Surprise! On a nice and sunny Sunday morning we took a little trip to Swillington Ings to see what we could find. We were hoping for maybe our first Swallows. Possibly a fly over Osprey. And some nice breeding plumaged Black Necked Grebes. Throughout most of the day we kept our eyes to the sky just in case we even got a glimpse of a Swallow. But we had no luck but a 'booming' Bittern. And a Male Bullfinch. It was very f...

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : November 2014

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2014_11_01_archive.html

Some of my birding adventures! Saturday, 29 November 2014. After school on Friday my Dad took me to Spurn even though when we got there it was dark it means when we woke up the next morning we wouldn't waste any time getting there. The next morning we were told that we should go to the Sea watching hide as it is good early morning and it turned out to be great. We spent several hours in the hide. Our totals are:. 2 Red breasted Mergansers. 5 Red Throated Divers. And a Little Egret. We then went to tell t...

Some of my birding adventures! Sunday, 29 March 2015. In Search of Harriers and a Good Laugh. I started my half term with a very nice Friday afternoons trip over to Heslington Common in search of the Great Grey Shrike. And a few nests to start our nest record scheme off for the BTO. We had a good search of the site but unfortunately we had no luck with either but at around dusk, 2 amazing Barn Owls. They gave cracking views. It is the closest I have ever got to a Barn Owl. Around. Hen Harriers. In New Br...

Some of my birding adventures! Wednesday, 31 December 2014. Birding Highlights of 2014! In this post I will be talking about my birding highlights throughout the months of 2014. This is probably the best year I have had for birding with some great birds like Masked Shrike, Blyths Pipit. And loads of other great birds. We had a good start to the year with a Great Northern Diver. In Scarborough Harbour on the 2nd which showed very well. On the 5th we had a Eurasian White Fronted Goose. And 2 Lesser Redpolls.

Ellis' Wildlife Walks : LITTLE BITTERN!!!!

http://elliswildlife.blogspot.com/2015/07/little-bittern.html

Some of my birding adventures! Monday, 6 July 2015. Early Saturday morning we had a visit to RSPB Oldmoor in hope of seeing the cracking Male Little Bittern. Which had been seen on site in the past couple of days. This is one bird I have always wanted to see so I was really determined to see it. Were very nice to watch which also landed right in front of the hide! Also kept us entertained. Plus a Great Crested Grebe. Kept on catching very big fish which I was surprised to see it get it down! It was also ...

Early This Morning

Friday, January 28, 2011. Step inside the mind of my husband. A few years ago we were planning a trip to California. I suggested that we bike across the Golden Gate bridge (doesn't that sound fun! This was his response:. Why would I pay to do that when someone can kick me in the nuts for free? Thursday, January 13, 2011. It's Not Always Gonna Be Easy.
