Birder's Eye View: January 2008

http://earthbird.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Thursday, January 31, 2008. Added two more birds to my list today, both spotted in the same place. The first was an Eastern Bluebird. I'm actually surprised I hadn't seen one earlier this year. I saw them frequently in December, but this is the first I've seen on '08. And my second find for the day? I tried my hand at sketching one from my field guide when I got home. I drew this one with pencil and charcoal. Year list total: 53. Posted by Andrea at 5:45 PM. Wednesday, January 30, 2008. I know they're fa...

Birder's Eye View: Reconnecting with Nature

http://earthbird.blogspot.com/2011/10/reconnecting-with-nature.html

Saturday, October 29, 2011. Fortunately, fall break was last weekend, and, while it didn't quite satisfy my brain's need for some rest, I was able to get outside and reacquaint myself with the outdoors once more. Local police stopped traffic for the drive. It was a rather random event to stumble upon, but quite enjoyable and a very "Florida" experience. Look at that big bird! It didn't appear to have been shot (unfortunately such is the fate of most large gators around here), but it was otherwise impossi...

Birder's Eye View: February 2008

http://earthbird.blogspot.com/2008_02_01_archive.html

Friday, February 29, 2008. Well, I haven't done any "official" birding in a while, but I did finish this sketch last night. I've been seeing a lot of Anhingas lately, and I realized I've never tried drawing one before. So, on a lark (ha, no bird pun intended), I found a cool photo of an Anhinga in my 1968 Florida Birds book. Today, I saw a Pileated Woodpecker. Making short work of an oak tree (see below). I got some great shots of this guy, since he was so close to where I was standing. Interestingly eno...

Birder's Eye View: March 2008

http://earthbird.blogspot.com/2008_03_01_archive.html

Saturday, March 29, 2008. It is not only fine feathers that make fine birds.". Well, it's not very exciting or notable in any way, shape, or form, but. it's a bird. A Tricolored Heron. In its breeding plumage, to be exact. I saw it yesterday at a friend's house. (Thanks for the pictures, Mom! I'm going birding next week, so hopefully I'll have something more interesting to report on at that time. Posted by Andrea at 9:17 AM. Wednesday, March 19, 2008. Searching for animals, all over the world: December 2011

http://stickbugdiver.blogspot.com/2011_12_01_archive.html

Searching for animals, all over the world. Wednesday, December 21, 2011. No birding today :-(. Well, I forgot about how long I have school on Wednesday and how early it gets dark in the winter. Today was the shortest day of the whole year and since I had school until 3PM it made no sense to go search for the Velvet Scoters. Before I would have found them the light would have been already gone. I hope I get to try for them on Friday. Tuesday, December 20, 2011. I WANT TO GO BIRDING! In the last month I ha...

Searching for animals, all over the world. Tuesday, November 29, 2011. Ship passages to and from Heligoland. It was almost impossible to get some good pictures during the ship passages, even though I saw some nice birds:. 3 Parasitic Jaegers (NEW). 1 Pomarine Jaeger (NEW). 3 Red-throated Loons (NEW). 8 Black Scoters (NEW). 1 Greater Scaup (NEW). 11 Grey Seals (NEW). There were lots of new birds during those passages, that I haven't seen while being on Heligoland itself. Sunday, November 27, 2011. 1 male ...

Searching for animals, all over the world: ALL Woodpeckers (but Lesser Spotted)!!!

http://stickbugdiver.blogspot.com/2012/03/all-woodpeckers-but-lesser-spotted.html

Searching for animals, all over the world. Wednesday, March 14, 2012. ALL Woodpeckers (but Lesser Spotted)! Before I tell you about my recent trip to Ireland I want to tell you about my day yesterday in the Duvenstedter Brook. Actually I had an appointment with one of my Blog readers from the UK, but regrettably he was ill, so I headed out on my own. The White-throated Dipper is still there and I finally got some nice pics, eventhough they are still somewhat blurry. Another Middle Spotted Woodpecker dist...

Searching for animals, all over the world: July 2011

http://stickbugdiver.blogspot.com/2011_07_01_archive.html

Searching for animals, all over the world. Friday, July 29, 2011. 24 days in Madrid. The last 3 1/2 weeks have I spent in Madrid due to a scholarship I got from the spanish government. It was in first place a scholarship to learn spanish and to getting to know the spanish culture and in fact I saw very much culture. But nevertheless I always kept an eye open in search of animals and well I was successful: 18 new bird species! Also tons of new butterflies and over all, many new friends! 24 days in Madrid.

Searching for animals, all over the world: March 2012

http://stickbugdiver.blogspot.com/2012_03_01_archive.html

Searching for animals, all over the world. Thursday, March 22, 2012. Last Saturday I went to an interesting area quite close to my home (about 20 minutes by bike), that I hadn't visited since I was a very young child! The day before a Red-necked Grebe had been seen there and so I took the opportunity to get to know the area a little bit. On the lake were 10 Gadwalls, 1 Pochard and 2 Mute Swans and of course my first-for-Hamburg Red-necked Grebe. What a beauty! Doesn't matter. I had a beautiful day. Actua...

Searching for animals, all over the world. Thursday, February 9, 2012. 23km walk at -13°C through the Duvenstedter Brook. It all began with a request in a forum about birds (called Birdent forum), where a person wanted to get to know other birders and new areas in Hamburg. So I was happy, that finally I could go birding with another person and we agreed thus to meet at 10AM to visit the Brook and search if we could find some nice winter birds. A second success was a new species for the area: 5 flyover Sm...

http://stickbugdiver.blogspot.com/2011_06_01_archive.html

Searching for animals, all over the world. Wednesday, June 29, 2011. I love the Duvenstedter Brook! Tuesday, June 21, 2011. Büsum is a small town in the north of Germany, very close to the North sea. Me and my family went there, and as we had made no plan for the following days I used on of the days to go birding. I already woke up at 4AM and then walked the whole day along the coast, in the end about 30km. This is the way I went (also some kilometers back, which makes 30km in the end): Way. Well, I have...

Searching for animals, all over the world: September 2011

http://stickbugdiver.blogspot.com/2011_09_01_archive.html

Searching for animals, all over the world. Friday, September 23, 2011. The rutting season as begun for the Red Deer, therefore I now always hear them when I'm in the Brook, last time I went I did also manage to see a few. I found a new area species for me, as a group of about 60 Wigeons was swimming and feeding on a lake, near to the Brook. I saw a White-tailed Eagle, like almost always in the Brook. That made those 3 Great Egrets fly out of there cover. Another new area species for me. But this year I'l...

Searching for animals, all over the world. Wednesday, April 20, 2011. The Duvenstedter Brook never gets boring! Monday, April 18, 2011. In the Wedeler Marsch again. Apart from the Cattle Egret there were also some other very cool birds. My personal favourite was the singing male Bluethroat, but I also liked the Yellow Wagtail, the Ruff, the Snipe, the Shovelers, Garganeys and the Avocets, just to name a few of the coolest. Friday, April 15, 2011. Wednesday, April 13, 2011. Wednesday, April 6, 2011. Birds...
