eat, dig, man, woman: December 2009

Eat, dig, man, woman. One couple's exploration of growing, cooking and eating food in a small, coastal valley of south-east Tasmania. Saturday, December 19, 2009. Grilled chook and scapes. Today for dinner, I deboned a whole, free-range chook and marinated it with smoked paprika, dried greek oregano (from last year) and orange juice. I tied it up and then grilled it with a bunch of garlic scapes (the flowering stems) over embers on my fire drum. It was sooo good! Subscribe to: Posts (Atom).

Eat, dig, man, woman. One couple's exploration of growing, cooking and eating food in a small, coastal valley of south-east Tasmania. Tuesday, October 28, 2008. Planting out the tomatoes. To minimise our risk even further, we covered each seedling with a cut-off 2 litre plastic juice bottle, to be removed when we're feeling extra brave given that we are prone to frosts sitting in a cool air drainage as we are. This year we might sell any excess locally. Sunday, October 12, 2008. Seedlings and the beds.

Eat, dig, man, woman. One couple's exploration of growing, cooking and eating food in a small, coastal valley of south-east Tasmania. Saturday, January 2, 2010. For christmas, even if we don't care too much for big gatherings or presents (the kids like the latter), we still love drinking and eating well. After this, we fell asleep. I also had just bought some spanish-style blood sausage - morcilla - and really wanted to make a typical spanish dish of broad beans with morcilla. So, we had (clockwise from ...

Eat, dig, man, woman. One couple's exploration of growing, cooking and eating food in a small, coastal valley of south-east Tasmania. Monday, December 29, 2008. With a small amount of wood - a few sticks or pine cones - I can get a flame that's hot enough to burn my legs and that lasts for long enough to do a stir fry. This time I made a version of the Thai dish with prawns (which we didn't grow), holy basil, garlic, snow peas, bok choy and chillis (which we did). Summer solstice garden progress. If the ...

Stir Ven @ 43°S: January 2012

Stir Ven @ 43°S. Building the Francois Vivier designed camp cruising boat "Stir Ven" in Tasmania. What this is about. For at least a few years I have thought that I should build an open, or mostly open, 20-something footer that would satisfy these urges. After much looking around at designs, we finally settled on the Stir Ven. She is beautiful, fast, seaworthy, floats in 25cm of water and is designed as an adventure boat on which one can spend a few nights. Monday, January 23, 2012. I cut out the paper p...

Eat, DINK, & Be Merry – The Je Ne Sais Quoi of a Joyful Life
Eat, DINK, and Be Merry. The Je Ne Sais Quoi of a Joyful Life. Monarch garden favorites, part I. October 22, 2017. Our tiny yard here in Houston's First Ward started as a patch of grass. First, we added some canna lilies. Later, we got rid of the grass and turned the rest of the yard into a drought-resistant oasis of local(ish) plants. We're now an established monarch breeding ground - we see them from early spring through about Thanksgiving every year. Posted in At home in First Ward. October 13, 2017.
