Eating Local in the Tropics

This is my experiment with eating locally in South Florida. Eating and buying locally produced goods is good for the environment, good for your health and great for small, local economies. For me, it feels like the right thing to do. The problem is that all of the literature about locavorism is based on life in temperate climates and I live in the tropics. This is a record of my experiences, with a little added humor, as I try to become a tropical locavore.

Eating Local in the Tropics: October 2009

http://eatinglocalinthetropics.blogspot.com/2009_10_01_archive.html

Eating Local in the Tropics. Thursday, October 29, 2009. I was fascinated, when at the end, the authors harvested their own sea salt. All they did was gather some seawater and boil it down until nothing but salt remained. I could do that! How hadn't I thought of that before? Surely it couldn't be that difficult and living a mile from the beach, I have access to as much seawater as I want. I began to have visions of salt harvesting. I planned to call it "Florida Sel. How can you not love that name? Florid...

Eating Local in Phoenix

Eating Local in Phoenix. And in the end. A year-and-a-half ago I started this blog. It was to be an experiment. Could a grad student make one meal a week from all local ingredients? The answer, it turns out is yes. (As long as you take the term “meal” lightly.). Now, I’m 11 days from graduation and I’ll no longer be a poor grad student. I’ll be a poor, recently-graduated student. There’s a difference, I’m sure. It’s funny to look back at that first post. It became about marmalade. And giant sweet potatoes.
