It's a work in progress to find time for this blog and change my cooking habits so the outcome falls within the daylight hours, but it will happen. However, like a squirrel stashing nuts for the winter, I have a back catalogue of trips and experiments that I have long been meaning to share, here are just a few to make up for the record stint of silence. We definitely had roasts from time to time, but there was never any rule that it would be on Sunday, it could pop up at any day of the week - I liked that spontaneity! Today I was invited to my classmate Ana's house for a "Brazilian dinner". I was pretty excited, I really didn't know what to expect, other than I was pretty sure that rice and beans would be part of the equation (I wasn't wrong! It specially from the local supermarket. The initial proposition was that we were going to do some American style BBQ pork ribs, but this plan fell apart, like so much tender meat, when we weren't able to find a decent or affordable butcher. Berlin has quite a few Turkish butchers, but since pork is like Muslim Kryptonite, it wasn't such an easy find. Roll on plan B. And Finbar made a dog-friend! Who wouldn't be a bit crazy after everything Christchurch has been through. That brings me to the other aspect which made this journey back so odd - and it was knowing that my home city had been largely destroyed by 2 huge earthquakes a few years earlier, and that this would be the first time I'd see the effects firsthand. Our first photostop in small town New Zealand was the town of Greymouth. THAT'S BLASPHEMY, THAT'S.THAT'S - that's fucking delicious is what it is. Ketchup is the sugary, vinegary, condiment of the gods, and I'm standing by this one because I've had a love affair with Heinz ketchup. I sometimes imagine good old Mr. Heinz as a dapper, 3-piece suit wearing gentleman with a curly moustache and tobacco pipe. What do you say to that?
