Eats lutes and leaves. Tuesday, October 06, 2009. Equal temperament (boo, hiss) is the modern standard. Mean temperament (1/5 comma, 1/6 comma, .), just intonation, Pythagorean/ natural temperament, Valotti, Werckmeister, . The debate rages. There are even i-phone applications. For different historical tuning systems. Refer elsewhere for more detailed explanations, for example Stuart Isacoff's book Temperament. Aimed at non-specialist readers. So, I'm with Vincentio Galilei (father of Galileo G) in advoc...

Eats lutes and leaves. Saturday, November 21, 2009. From harmony, from heav'nly harmony, this universal frame began. Now pay attention. This diagram (click to enlarge) reveals the secret of life, the universe and everything. It appears in Marin Mersenne's. Volume 2 (1637). It depicts the great Lyre of the universe, governed by the divine Orpheus, who tunes all the parts of the world as he pleases. At the top right you can even see a divine hand emerging from a cloud and turning a tuning peg. He's very in...

Eats lutes and leaves. Sunday, December 05, 2010. Finally, some videos of me in concert! I've played quite a few solo concerts this year of a programme of music from the Matthew Holmes lute book, to mark the publication by the Lute Society of a new facsimile edition of this important manuscript. These videos are of my concert in October at an English Country House, Hammerwood Park in Sussex. It's a live recording, of course, so no second chances or retakes! Http:/ www.youtube.com/watch?
Eats lutes and leaves: Lautenschlagen du edle Kunst
http://eatslutes.blogspot.com/2010/03/lautenschlagen-du-edle-kunst.html
Eats lutes and leaves. Monday, March 15, 2010. Lautenschlagen du edle Kunst. I've just been listening to Paul O'Dette's lovely CD of solo lute music by Melchior Newsidler. Newsidler's Teutsch Lautenbuch (Strassburg, 1574) is an ambitious book. It's written in German tablature, an unintuitive system of notation that makes even lutenists shudder. In his foreword, Newsidler explains why he published two books in Italian tablature some years before [in 1566]. Hence this Teutsch Lautenbuch. Amazingly, Benedic...

AbsoLute 81: November 2008
http://absolute81.blogspot.com/2008_11_01_archive.html
Life in the Tarn. Friday, November 28, 2008. Then next weekend I am playing a solo concert in Córdoba for the annual meeting of the Sociedad de la Vihuela. The Sociedad has put together a fine programme. For the weekend. I'm going to play more or less the same programme that I played last year for the Lute Society in England, with renaissance lute music by Dowland, Holborne and Spinacino followed by Britten's. Sunday, November 09, 2008. To look after them. Possibly the strangest is Clipperton.

AbsoLute 81: May 2009
http://absolute81.blogspot.com/2009_05_01_archive.html
Life in the Tarn. Friday, May 22, 2009. I was nearly as surprised as Fearnley to discover that the Lycée Barral comes in at number 41 out of the 1,909 lycées in France in the recent rankings by L'Express. Barral achieved a 99% pass rate for the baccalauréat in 2008. Pretty impressive. Mostly to Castres' biggest lyceé, the Borde Basse, which presents nearly four times as many Bac candidates and comes in at a still-respectable 713 in the national rankings. In the Figaro listings. Life in the Tarn. Sunday, December 13, 2009. I've not been doing much on this blog recently. For the last six months, in fact. Shameful. Although I have been more active on my other blog, http:/ eatslutes.blogspot.com/. Which is more specifically lute-related. Anyway, sort of covering both areas, I've just played a couple of concerts in the magnificent Château de Pau. Rcaawdydag elan credit card Rilioasqpiltiflpe. AbsoLute 81: Córdoba
http://absolute81.blogspot.com/2008/12/crdoba.html
Life in the Tarn. Wednesday, December 10, 2008. These characters are Galatea and Polyphemus. You can tell it's Polyphemus because of the eye in the middle of his forehead. This large mosaic from the second century AD was dug up 50 years ago in Córdoba and now adorns a wall in the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos in the city, along with various other equally splendid mosaics. I was in Córdoba at the weekend to play a concert for the Sociedad de la Vihuela. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom).

AbsoLute 81: January 2009
http://absolute81.blogspot.com/2009_01_01_archive.html
Life in the Tarn. Saturday, January 24, 2009. French TV is showing a programme on 27 January called L'abolition. About the end of the death penalty in France in . 1981. The last person to be guillotined was in 1977. Britain got there rather earlier, with the Murder (Abolition of Death Penalty) Act 1965. Still, in one area of life the French are a century ahead. Church and state were formally separated in 1905, and laïcité. Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). Eats Lutes and Leaves (my other blog).

I was in Córdoba at the weekend to play a concert for the Sociedad de la Vihuela. My concert was in the Casa Góngora, in the old part of the city near the Mezquita. Luis de Góngora, as it happens, was a Cordoban poet who wrote La Fábula de Polifemo y Galatea. Or mosque is an astonishing building from Córdoba's Arab pa...

A love affair with food and drink. Bars / Cocktail Bars. Saturday, 15 February 2014. I love making baked cheesecakes, they always go down well in my family. Helping ordinary people make extraordinary food! Today we are going to be making a Spicy Kanikama Salad.
