Too Many Points

I have too many points on my map. It’s making things so slow. This comes up pretty often when you try to map many points on a webmap. Once you get over a few thousand points, your browser really starts to chug! For example, the map above is running with the mapping library Leaflet. And has around 30,000 points on it. Zooming (making the map more or less detailed) and panning (those attempts you see above to pull the map to the left, then the right) at the very least test your patience. What is to be done?

Using SVG markers with TileMill and CartoCSS. Here are some quick directions for adding SVG. Markers to a map in TileMill. Add the base of your map. In this case I am just using the NYC borough outlines, but yours will vary depending on what you’re mapping. Here is the CartoCSS. Now add the points you would like to show on your map. Looking at vacancy in New Orleans using parcel and building shapefiles. While working on Living Lots NOLA. We have been looking for a good spatial database of vacant parcels citywide. When we have done this work in NYC. We have been lucky enough to have land use databases that contain vacancy as a starting point for this type of analysis.
