It seems even more pretentious when you mention The Muse as something you rely on as a cryptic setter but, you know, she’s either there or not, and if she chooses to take some time off then you can come unstuck. What is she? Well, she is NOT the clue-writer. As it’s been so long since I wrote a song, I recently opened up Word and began penning some lyrics. For some reason it was particularly bad this year; the first couple of weeks of January were pretty hopeless, to be honest, almost as if I’d clean forgotten how to write clues. Actually, I say ‘for some reason’ I can identify part of it, an unexpected obsession which accounted for more time than it should have. Muse are the ones to blame. Crosswords by Anax / Loroso. Puns and Spoonerisms in conflict? Whenever I put a phrase answer in a grid one of the first things I look at especially if nothing else has immediately sprung out is whether or not the opening letters point to a Spoonerism. Often they don’t but, when they do, the temptation is there, but it’s tinged with reluctance. And that’s difficult to understand. So it feels slightly odd that such apparent accuracy often draws complaint. Is looser better? And does that apply to puns?

Crosswords by Anax / Loroso. For some reason several questions about grid balance have cropped up in the past month, and the best one to answer is the simple What is it? Solvers very rarely mention the subject, but new setters have asked if good balance simply means a good mix of clue types. Mixing up clue types is good, of course, but what you’re achieving there is variety and, to an extent, style. It doesn’t necessarily create balance in the grid. So what is grid balance?
