The Edge of Will

This is a record of my travels through material and symbolic worlds in cycles of creating, re-creating, and being created by earthly materials, universal forces, and human inspirations. Tuesday, August 26, 2014. An heirloom finished and a new craft (to me). But alongside the making of this object, I have been exploring what are new avenues of creation to me, and attempting to delve deeper into the inexplicable but penetrating meaning I find in the hand-crafts. The Edge of Will: Four Saxes à la Petr Florianek (Part II)

http://www.edgeofwill.blogspot.com/2013/09/four-saxes-la-petr-florianek-part-ii.html

This is a record of my travels through material and symbolic worlds in cycles of creating, re-creating, and being created by earthly materials, universal forces, and human inspirations. Monday, September 9, 2013. Four Saxes à la Petr Florianek (Part II). The next step was to remove the antler waist and transfer my design onto it, which was certainly an exercise in eyeballing! Project #3, really quick, was the re-hilting of an old sax blade I made in Worcester, Massachusetts with my good friend Jack McAul...

This is a record of my travels through material and symbolic worlds in cycles of creating, re-creating, and being created by earthly materials, universal forces, and human inspirations. Monday, October 29, 2012. Welling II: the Seax. Classic Anglo-Saxon broken-back seax. Finishes, and beyond. Therefore, a context-minded smith has great freedom in his design and boundless inspiration to choose from. Some of my favorite museum pieces of saxes. A well-known beautifully inlaid Anglo-Saxon specimen. It's hard...

This is a record of my travels through material and symbolic worlds in cycles of creating, re-creating, and being created by earthly materials, universal forces, and human inspirations. Thursday, March 27, 2014. It is another passage which we cannot choose to avoid, through which we must change like any other passage. It is a process of initiation and transformation. A blade is true, a blade is sharp, a blade shines with the light of day. Until its time as a blade is over. Then there is another i...Creat...

Blade from scraps | The Knotted Wyrm

https://lukeshearerbladesmith.wordpress.com/2012/12/28/blade-from-scraps

Handcrafted knives and swords by Bladesmith Luke Shearer. Seax Collaberation →. December 28, 2012. The knife I welded up from scrap pieces is forged, heat treated, polished, and etched in ferric chloride, a weak acid, to expose the pattern. I wanted a weird shape to match the strangeness of the pattern. I will send it to fellow bladesmith Matt Waters for a handle. View all posts by Luke Shearer →. This entry was posted in Uncategorized. Handcrafted knives and swords by Bladesmith Luke Shearer. Monthly Archives: September 2012. September 3, 2012. This blade was forged from 1075/1080, with fittings of mild steel. The grip is walnut with a historically accurate leather wrap. The blade is just under 24″ and, while I am not certain of the weight, it is very light. … Continue reading →. By the Red Embers. Handcrafted knives and swords by Bladesmith Luke Shearer. February 22, 2013. I contacted fellow bladesmith Myles Mulkey with the idea to collaborate on an Anglo-Saxon seax from around the 9th or 10th century. I wanted to make a pattern welded blade, so I took a four bar core from a failed Norwegian langsax project and welded it to a high carbon edge bar of 1084 steel. Here are the billets prepared for welding:. I then forge the blade closely to shape…. Ground to white steel. The spine is left quite thick.

Forging stories: října 2012

Pátek 26. října 2012. The idea came to me while polishing a handle of a knife for another project, as this operation usualy consumes a tiny bit of brain capacity, i am allowing my imagination to go free. I was tempted for a long time to make another Tolkien inspired piece, most likely Rohan. I also like to make spears, and finaly i am tempted to make a dragonslaying weapon. It melted to an idea to create the grave goods of Rohan hero Fram, son of Frumgar, who slayed the great dragon Scatha. Here is the o...

Úterý 9. dubna 2013. Or Haufuthupnari in Old Norse is my newest creation. A single edged sword with H type pommel ornamented in Borre style. I dont want to write here about how and from which materials i created the sword, i would more like to write about the spirit of the piece. Did he win it in a fight? Did it passed from father to son? The name represents not only the obvious physiological meaning but also a learning experience for me. Myles came up gain with great story in this poem. By The Red Embers.

edge of what is reasonable

Edge of what is reasonable. Monday, December 15, 2008. First time for everything. Yesterday was one of the hardest days of my life.  It hurts when a dream, a vision comes to an end.  For six years, Jim and I have been dreaming about the Canopy, about what church should be and would be.  And now we have close the doors of our visionary, creative, at one time vibrant church. So why write today.  . Subscribe to: Posts (Atom). First time for everything. View my complete profile.

Musings from the edge of whelmed - Edge of Whelmed

Musings from the edge of whelmed. Another hole in the tapestry. She could speak in tongues, and every so often she would grab me by the hand after Mass and say, "I got a Word for you from the Lord." Then she would tell me what He wanted me to know. She taught Bible studies at a home for unwed mothers and once a week I would babysit for the children who had already been born so their mothers wouldn't be distracted. Her faith was amazing to watch, and it was contagious. 50 years ago today my childhood ende...

Musings from the edge of whelmed. March For Our Lives. Himself, who had no plans of going in the first place, suggested that I go to the rally on the Boston Common if not to the March itself. Still I wouldn't budge. Then he announced that HE was going and I could either come with him or pick him up at the subway station when he returned. So I went. Next time I promise I will slay my demons and march with you. And someday I hope to be able to vote for you. Enjoy your thoughtful journey. November has Thank...
