This is one of those things that usually raises a 'what on earth is. When encountered in the countryside. It is a gall - a part of a plant that has been grown into an unusual shape by an insect in order to make its nest chamber. Looks like meat, but this is Fistulina hepatica. Beefsteak fungus is one of the most distinctive edible mushrooms. Some photos of the Millhouse gunpowder factory - it operated from 1839 to 1921. The factory site had been planted up with trees to baffle the effects of accidental explosions, and it is now a beautiful, mossy woodland.
