Apple spice muffins | Shewolfinthevalley
https://shewolffe.com/2013/03/10/apple-spice-muffins
Domestic goings-on in Central Scotland. Who is the Shewolffe? I woke at 6.30 this morning. The Captain was awake and had brought me a cup of Earl Grey. Generally on a Sunday I don’t drink Earl Grey at 6.30am, but the thought was kind. It was a dull spring day, nothing special. I didn’t drink the tea, but fell back into a deep sleep till after 9am, when the quality of the light in the room had changed dramatically – there was an inch of snow on the ground and it was still falling. A pinch of salt. Bake fo...
Boozy mini cakes for BozzyFest | Shewolfinthevalley
https://shewolffe.com/2015/05/10/boozy-mini-cakes-for-bozzyfest
Domestic goings-on in Central Scotland. Who is the Shewolffe? Boozy mini cakes for BozzyFest. We get the Sunday Times every weekend. And occasionally the Times on a Saturday too. Last weekend the Times promoted that it had recipes for Bank Holiday baking. So, of course, I didn’t see much of the rest of the paper (apart from the utterly ace column by Caitlin Moran). The artisanal approach, smooshing gin and white choc icing on top of mini pear cakes. There, rant over. I’d never heard of Vanilla Blac...

Rhubarb marmalade | Shewolfinthevalley
https://shewolffe.com/2014/04/30/rhubarb-marmalade
Domestic goings-on in Central Scotland. Who is the Shewolffe? I love my local farm shop. Let me give it a shout out. it’s at Overton Farm. Anyway, back to seasonal and local and all that jazz. My seasonal treat at the farmshop on Saturday was a big bunch of rhubarb. I LOVE rhubarb; it’s that tart sharpness that just zings for me. From Thane Prince’s Jellies, Jams and Chutneys. 1kg rhubarb, washed and cut into even 1cm wee chunks. About 3cm fresh root ginger, grated. You do have a ginger grater. At this s...
That cinnamon apple jelly | Shewolfinthevalley
https://shewolffe.com/2013/09/29/that-cinnamon-apple-jelly
Domestic goings-on in Central Scotland. Who is the Shewolffe? That cinnamon apple jelly. You like cinnamon right? And you can imagine having hot buttered toast spread with a deliciously sweet and cinnamony apply jelly right? Well what are you waiting for? Go get some apples, preferably cooking apples, which for me means Bramleys, but any tart apple which cooks down into mush will do. About 3lb apples, cut into bits – no need to core or peel. Thinly pared rind of 1 lemon. If not, off you go to your neares...
Caraway biscuits | Shewolfinthevalley
https://shewolffe.com/2013/10/13/caraway-biscuits
Domestic goings-on in Central Scotland. Who is the Shewolffe? Yesterday I made my own sort of a borscht. A beetroot soup, lightly flavoured with caraway seeds. It reminded me how much I love not only beetroots, but also caraway and this morning I woke with a hankering to make caraway biscuits. I know that in my books there are 53 recipes which use caraway seeds, including poppy and caraway crackers and caraway vodka, both of which I will be trying soon. Caraway is perhaps a flavour most associated with n...
Hilda Gerber’s Chocolate Sauce | Shewolfinthevalley
https://shewolffe.com/2011/12/20/hilda-gerbers-chocolate-sauce
Domestic goings-on in Central Scotland. Who is the Shewolffe? Hilda Gerber’s Chocolate Sauce. Hilda Gerber’s chocolate sauce is amazing. It’s amazingly naughty and amazingly rich and for me an amazingly strong memory of Christmas and Hogmanay from my childhood. It’s also ridiculously easy to make. And once you can make Hilda Gerbers (the sauce is always just called Hilda Gerbers in our family) you can make the infamous Meringue Mountain, all gloriously seventies. Traditional Cooking of the Cape Malays.
Sophisticated chocolate brownies | Shewolfinthevalley
https://shewolffe.com/2011/09/25/sophisticated-chocolate-brownies
Domestic goings-on in Central Scotland. Who is the Shewolffe? Brownies seem to be endlessly adaptable. I’ve made them with ginger, with nuts, with more and more and more chocolate. I think I must try them with mint. And possibly orange, although I’m never quite sure about chocolate and orange, and thoroughly disapprove of orange anywhere near milk chocolate. But this weekend it’s all about the sophisticated flavour combo of cardamom and chocolate. I have to credit both The Times. 15 green cardamom pods.
Buttery butteries | Shewolfinthevalley
https://shewolffe.com/2014/10/26/buttery-butteries
Domestic goings-on in Central Scotland. Who is the Shewolffe? I was away on business for 10 days, and when I got back the Captain had re-discovered butteries. They weren’t quite as he remembered them, not as flaky. Or buttery I suspect. But then they had been bought from one of the cheaper supermarkets, you know one of the ones with an i, an l and a d in its name. But not really a recommended activity if you are trying to stick to a low carb diet. 500g strong white flour. 1 1/2 tsp dried yeast. While the...

The Edinburgh International Book Festival | Words, Sounds and Imagery from Charlotte Square
The Edinburgh International Book Festival. Words, Sounds and Imagery from Charlotte Square. Wrapping Up the 2011 Edinburgh International Book Festival. Edinburgh International Book Festival closed its doors to the public for another year. And now that we’ve all had time to reverse levitate back to earth from the euphoria that went with another hugely successful festival, I think now’s as good a time as any to look back at the highlights of August in Charlotte Square. 11 Ten at Tens3 debates. Edinburgh Books – Edinburgh's largest second-hand bookshop.
Edinburgh Books has been a landmark for book lovers for more than twenty years. Formerly known as West Port Books, it was saved by the skin of its teeth from becoming yet another café in 2006. The atmosphere in this second-hand Edinburgh bookshop tends towards the dog-eared and slighty foxed, but glimpses of rarity and respectability can be encountered if you look hard enough. Clarence the water buffalo keeps a beady eye on proceedings aided by Graham, the rather stuck-up grouse. Edinburgh, EH3 9DP.
