La Sorbonne was a notorious pub/club throughout the eighties, deep in the belly of the Cowgate. It played host to various gigs as well as being one of the most infamous places in Edinburgh. The Assembly Rooms on Edinburgh's George Street opened it's doors on the 11th January 1787. The hall has played host to figures such as Charles Dickens and William Makepeace Thackary. It has been used sporadically for concerts over the years. The Caley Picture House at 31 Lothian Road opened in 1923 and played host to many concerts throughout the seventies and into the mid eighties, when it changed it's name to the Caley Palais. After a couple of decades under various nightclub guises the venue reopened as The Picture House, owned by the Mama group. The Empire Theatre in Nicolson Street, has stood since 7th November 1892, the first of the great Moss Empire chain, built by famous theatre architect Frank Matcham.
