What's going on with the library? Attribution and citation: What’s the difference? November 3, 2013. I hear the terms citation and attribution tossed around interchangeably, but I believe that the difference is signifiant enough to matter, especially as we encourage students to research, remix, and release their projects to the world. Attribution is about giving credit to the original creator of the image, video, or idea and providing a link back to the original. When thinking about attribution in the co...

What's going on with the library? Recommended by 8th Graders. February 5, 2014. I asked some students today what book I should read next. Here’s the list they gave me in a span of a few minutes, while also discussing the book to movie phenomena (Read it first? Asking for book recommendations, and talking about why they loved the books. I’m happy to say that there are only a couple books on the list that we do not have in the library (but that I’ll order if they’re popular). Forest of Hands and Feet.

Students First | Redefining the Stacks

What's going on with the library? February 23, 2014. When I plan lessons, weigh in on curriculum, or consider adding something to my library collection, I think about students: How will it impact them? What is the outcome I’m hoping for? What are the pros and cons? When possible, I get input from students or consider those I have taught or will teach. What do we hope for students of today? Are we educating our 5 year olds for their future occupations? Are we educating them to be well rounded individuals?

What's going on with the library? The Rules of Survival–A compelling read about family, abuse, strength, and responsibility. February 19, 2013. Riveting. Intense. Depressing. Uplifting. Frustrating. The Rules of Survival. This is an intense book, with some intense themes. It is bad enough that the adults who were immersed in the situation let it happen, but how could the schools not have noticed anything was wrong? How many children are being neglected and abused that we overlook? I wonder, when teenager...

My Personal Learning Summary. As I reflect on what I’ve learned throughout the course, there are so many things that pop into my mind. Some things I learned from ground zero, having no knowledge beforehand, and other things I took my knowledge and skill set to a new level be learning more about something I was already familiar with, or thought I was anyways. For example, was one of those areas in which I had little (to no) knowledge. Ten years ago, the word itself was unheard of! And borrow and steal!
