Is Teaching a Profession, an Occupation, a Calling, or a Job? Is Teaching a Profession, an Occupation, a Calling, or a Job? June 19, 2015. August 6, 2015. So, are they quitting because they’re fed up with their heavy-handed union bosses? The hostility of the question took me by surprise. I was explaining to my dinner companion, a veteran lawyer, that 40% of teachers leave the field within five years, and right away he jumped to his anti-union conclusion disguised as a question. Certainly, teachers and th...

A View From the Edge: January 2013
http://linnbentonpresidentsblog.blogspot.com/2013_01_01_archive.html
Monday, January 28, 2013. So, What’s Going On? If you know me at all, then you know that I believe that almost every important truth can be illustrated by quoting some snippet of dialogue from one of my favorite movies…. and I have many favorites. And, while the phrase “What’s going on? Michael (the lead boy) asks the vampires (who he does not yet know are vampires) “What’s going on? 8221; and from there he, and we, go on to learn the answer. 8220;What’s going on? And, while the “goings on” h...First, Ti...

The Harriet Tubman Agenda: James Buchanan (1919-Oct.-03 to 2013-Jan.-09)

The Harriet Tubman Agenda. Education policy and homeschooling discussion. James Buchanan (1919-Oct.-03 to 2013-Jan.-09). Observes: " Jim died this past January. Were he still alive, he would today celebrate his 94th birthday.". James Buchanan attributed his success, in part, to his education in a one-room schoolhouse. Since the teacher could not instruct all students simultaneously, she allowed those students who could study on their own to work through the material without her help. John, Is That You.

The Harriet Tubman Agenda: Incentives and Insiders
http://harriettubmanagenda.blogspot.com/2013/09/incentives-and-insiders.html
The Harriet Tubman Agenda. Education policy and homeschooling discussion. One interesting read here. The point applies to as well to climate science, foreign aid (which isn't aid) and development (which isn't development) economics, allegedly crumbling infrastructure, education (which isn't education) policy, etc. Now read Robert Higgs, " All Government Policies Succeed in the Long Run. All of us have sufficient fortitude to bear the misfortunes of others.". Francois de La Rochefoucauld. John, Is That You.

The Harriet Tubman Agenda. Education policy and homeschooling discussion. Accreditation agencies protect the education industry from the market forces that raise quality and reduce costs in competitive industries. Unelected and largely unreported, they define "quality" in terms of inputs and so protect the jobs and revenue stream of the US K-PhD education industry. The role of accreditation agencies receives attention here. Credit by exam would bust this racket. Links to this post. John, Is That You.

The Harriet Tubman Agenda: School Choice Week
http://harriettubmanagenda.blogspot.com/2015/01/school-choice-week.html
The Harriet Tubman Agenda. Education policy and homeschooling discussion. The State of Hawaii maintains the most highly centralized school system in the US. The Governor appoints the members of the Board of Education. The Board (with frequent interference from the Legislature) controls the single, State-wide school district. Hawaii's relaxed position on homeschooling provides the only bright contrast in this dark picture. Subscribe to: Post Comments (Atom). John, Is That You. Letters From An Ohio Farmer.
