Friday, 27 March 2009. Edward Julius Detmold (1883 – 1957) was born in London, the twin brother of Charles Maurice. They worked together making sketches at the Zoological Gardens and exhibited together from the age of fourteen. He became one of the best Edwardian animal illustrated, known for his subtle placement of animals within their natural environment and the decorative composition of his works. He retired from the world of illustration to live out his days in Montgomeryshire, Wales.
