Fourier Transform Infrared Spectrometer. Model = Nicolette Nexus 470. FT-IR spectrometers record the interaction of IR radiation with experimental samples, measuring the frequencies at which the sample absorbs the radiation and the intensities of the absorptions. FTIR experiments generally can be classified into the following two categories:. Qualitative analysis - where the aim is to identify the sample. Diffuse Reflectance IR Fourier Transmission Spectrometer. ATR Attenuated Total Reflectance.

Solid, liquid or gas samples are weighed and introduced into the sample boat. The sample is initially dried and then thermally decomposed in a continuous flow of oxygen. Combustion products are carried off and further decomposed in a hot catalyst bed. Mercury vapors are trapped on a gold amalgamator and subsequently desorbed for quantization. The mercury content is determined using atomic absorption spectrophotometry at 254 nm. Use the following links for more information:.

This July EECE held a special lab safety seminar, given by Mr. Bruce Backus, Asst Vice Chancellor of Environmental Health and Safety. The seminar covered general lab safety along with Brauer lab specific safety concerns. This meeting was held for everyone in the new buidling with the intention of starting our new labs in Brauer Hall with an attitude for safety being a high priority for all of us.
