The mid-term retreat was last weekend, which is why I was unable to blog. The entire team went to Hell’s Gate National Park, and it was a lot of fun! We started out with a general question. If you had complete control over everything in Kakamega or in Kenya, what would you do? A long conversation, but a fruitfu...

Elizabeth KonKolics's Blog from Kenya. Just another WordPress.com weblog. A Scene from OUT OF AFRICA. June 27, 2009. Today our adventures led us to Crescent Island. This was the main filming location for the movie Out of Africa with Robert Redford and Meryl Streep. So we walked on this lovely peninsula that really embodied what I imagined Africa would look it large plains with Africa trees. We saw giraffes, including a baby one! More zebras, wildebeests, impalas, and several eagles. We walked around for ...

May 30, 2009, 6:57 pm. RECAP OF THE DAY:. Only two weeks earlier, Kakamega was a town at best.). You cannot be expected to fit perfectly in. Anyone around you who expects so is unrealistic and is not worth you losing sleep over. That is not to say, however, that you should make no effort whatsoever. If you know how to say a greeting in Kiswahili, you by all means should! We are going into the Kakamega Rainforest tomorrow and Monday for hiking and hanging out because Monday is a holiday! RECAP OF THE DAY:.

Just another WordPress.com weblog. July 6, 2009. For the fourth of july, most (if not all) of the interns met up at Golf Hotel on Saturday and hung out by the pool for most of the day. It was really nice, I think everybody got a pretty good tan. We all have some pretty incredible farmer’s tans from having to cover up everywhere we go. Last night, my mother took off to attend a session in Nairobi, but she should be back soon so I did not freak out too much. Today, I am back at the office, where I am s...

This blog will likely see more commentary on international development work in the future, but I felt this closure was necessary for the end of the Duke Engage trip and my experiences in Kakamega, Kenya. Thanks for your interest in international development, and I hope you’ll continue to occasionally check this...
