Adventures in Egypt

Wednesday, February 27, 2008. I find Arabic vocabulary hard, since with few cognates in English, it means a lot of memorization. I’ve tried everything—flash cards, copying lists, chanting aloud. My latest attempt has been to plaster the apartment with post-its. My roommate has asked me to remove the ones in the bathroom though; the letters could spell Allah. And the bathroom is an un-pure place. Friday, February 22, 2008. American Girl (or Easy Westerner with Loose Morals). Only in the Arab World. Origin...

Adventures in Egypt: January 2008

http://www.egyptbazaar.blogspot.com/2008_01_01_archive.html

Friday, January 25, 2008. Applying to extend my residence visa ranks as a bad day in Egypt. From standing in lines, to standing in wrong lines, visiting three offices, and elbowing to retain my place in line, I got the impression that far more people and documents enter than can ever hope to leave. People say if each person entering the building was fined one pound, we could pay off Egypt's national debt within the year. Image from http:/ www.touregypt.net/featurestories/mugamma.htm:. Wednesday, November 14, 2007. Speaking to some of the highest ranking embassy and military officials in Egypt right now, I was slightly horrified by attitudes. I shared horror stories with one military high up about the difficulty in getting internet in our apartment. "One month! Can you believe it! The conversation turned nasty, when the military leader said "and you wonder why Egypt is still developing! To sum up: The most welcome of breaks from Cairo's conservatism and reminders of home, but I'm relie...

The Adventures of a Balding 21st Century Explorer: August 2007

http://mitciu.blogspot.com/2007_08_01_archive.html

Thursday, August 30, 2007. Administrative stuff at AUC today. I learnt that they have scuba diving, which is quite cool. (See Dad, I'm learning a lot.). But there was one very memorable comment. We had a cultural session today, and one of the reminders was no hard Egyptian liquor. As Tomader Rifaat, the woman for study abroad, put it, "the best thing that can happen is that you'll go blind.". She got the microphone and asked, "How long does it take for you to go blind? Is Gin O.K? Jamia'a Ahmad Ibn Tulun.

The Adventures of a Balding 21st Century Explorer: عيد ميلاد سعيد ماثيو

http://mitciu.blogspot.com/2007/11/blog-post.html

Thursday, November 15, 2007. عيد ميلاد سعيد ماثيو. I had a nice bday dinner at Abu Al-Seed in Zamalek, which is an upper end Egyptian restaurant and apparently is a cool place to be seen. We had a bunch of mixed mezze (basically the food on the street made nicer for the restaurant) and then a couple of main dishes. I had a sort of veal tajine, followed by an amazing cake and a shisha. The Entrance to Abu Al-Seed in Zamalek, its right next to Diwan. In twelve, we managed to eat less than a 1/4 of it!

Friday, September 28, 2007. Went out on a photo walk around Zamalek today. Nothing amazing, but some interesting stuff. Here they are. Trash them :). Nile Plants ;). Not a nice photo, but check out this tripartite building. Ramadan Table (Grumpy people awaiting food). The Cop And The Taxi (Upcoming Film). A Cafe' by the Nile. Pepsi Will Save The World. Dinner Table and Ramadan Lamp. Oh, the Nile. Thursday, September 27, 2007. Monday, September 24, 2007. Goha, Joha, جحا. من أعلمُ العلماء عندكم؟ I have 40 ...

The Adventures of a Balding 21st Century Explorer: Sinai

http://mitciu.blogspot.com/2007/11/sinai.html

Monday, November 12, 2007. We wake up in Sharm (in time to see an MFO sign! And realize that we are actually in the middle of nowhere. Eventually we figure out how to get towards the beach - and the ultra-artificial pseudo-european paradise. Lacking any hotel reservation we wandered around the nice hotels - who all took one look at us; used to being treated so well in Cairo; and told us their hotels were full! Emma and Fidele enjoying the empty pool. Happily, we got a minibus to Dahab - about an hour and...

The Adventures of a Balding 21st Century Explorer: October 2007

http://mitciu.blogspot.com/2007_10_01_archive.html

Saturday, October 20, 2007. An Excerpt from "Endings". This is an excerpt from Endings,. My prof. says about the book "you either love it or you hate." If you hate it, imagine over 100 pages of stories like this one chained together without chapter or any other form of separation. Two old men wrapped in goat-hair cloaks were staring out of the big window at the vista of the garden spread out below them. Hot weather in March is tricky,' the other replied with a rasping voice. That's all over and done with...

Welcome to the internet home of Egypt Baptist Church. What the Bible Says About How to Be Right With God. 1 Acknowledge and confess to God your sin. For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God,". 2 Realize that your sin has real consequences! For the wages of sin is death," Romans 6:23(a). There is Great News! The penalty for your sins was paid by Jesus on the cross! But the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.". 3 You must turn from your sin (and to God). Romans 10:9, 13.
