eighth acre farm: trees-- growing to the sky
http://eighthacrefarm.blogspot.com/2014/11/trees-growing-to-sky.html
Learning urban self-sufficiency in the age of peak everything. Tuesday, November 4, 2014. Trees- growing to the sky. Daughter. and plums. I was working in the backyard last week with Hunter, a fellow blogger- whose blog has also gone partially dormant. We were making cider from apples he had foraged from around town, and the last of a batch that I had gotten from an orchard near Le Sueur. We had a lot of apples to work through and it took most of the afternoon. Are things really different this time?
eighth acre farm: September 2014
http://eighthacrefarm.blogspot.com/2014_09_01_archive.html
Learning urban self-sufficiency in the age of peak everything. Monday, September 1, 2014. A summer to test a gardener's mettle. Late august rain garden. this is one area that did really well this wet and cool summer. It would have been a hard summer for gardening even if my focus had been completely on it. Of course, I may have to install them during a heat wave in November now. You never know. So I guess I'll continue with minimal tillage and layering on organic matter. I think a balanced approach- ...
eighth acre farm: how to make homemade wine
http://eighthacrefarm.blogspot.com/2011/05/how-to-make-homemade-wine.html
Learning urban self-sufficiency in the age of peak everything. Thursday, May 5, 2011. How to make homemade wine. Gita and I squeezing the mashed fruit pulp to extract the juice. But that's not the point- what I'd like to talk about is one of the best skills to have as an urban homesteader- the ability to make your own high-quality booze. The latest article in the Archdruid Report. If you are not familiar with the organic chemistry of the process- it works more or less like this:. You fill a jar/vat/carbo...
eighth acre farm: leading economic indictor- my job
http://eighthacrefarm.blogspot.com/2014/02/leading-economic-indictor-my-job.html
Learning urban self-sufficiency in the age of peak everything. Friday, February 7, 2014. Leading economic indictor- my job. Well, now I have more time to spend with the kids. So, last Friday I got a call from the head of Human Resources while I was sitting in my cubicle trying to finish a project that I was supposed to turn in before the end of the day. In a very nice voice he asked, "Would you mind coming down to my office, Jeff? Of course. Why wouldn't I? So we had the obligatory awkward conversation&#...
eighth acre farm: steampunk dehydrators & other fun things
http://eighthacrefarm.blogspot.com/2014/04/steampunk-dehydrators-other-fun-things.html
Learning urban self-sufficiency in the age of peak everything. Monday, April 7, 2014. Steampunk dehydrators and other fun things. I had some fun over the weekend cobbling together a solar dehydrator for Gita. She wanted to dry out some bitter gourds that she had purchased at the Asian food store, and didn't want to smell up the house (because they don't smell good) or burn lots of energy using the electric stove to dry them out. So I started a new job today. Much the same as my previous one- but in a...

10 weeks to last frost (give or take) - how much to plant? | put your shovel where your mouth is
http://putyourshovel.blogspot.com/2014/03/10-weeks-to-last-frost-give-or-take-how.html
Put your shovel where your mouth is. Will work for (good) food. 10 weeks to last frost (give or take) - how much to plant? Where o where is spring. March 05, 2014. Well, the onions are up, and coming along nicely. This week on the planting schedule: eggplant, and some peppers. The first (and slowest-growing) of the heat-loving plants. So I've used that in the past- there are lots of other low-tech options for boosting heat. One question at this time of year is: how many plants to start? I have a running ...
6 weeks to last frost: Gardeners, start your tomatoes! | put your shovel where your mouth is
http://putyourshovel.blogspot.com/2014/04/6-weeks-to-last-frost-gardeners-start.html
Put your shovel where your mouth is. Will work for (good) food. 6 weeks to last frost: Gardeners, start your tomatoes! April 05, 2014. Sorry I'm a little late on this one, but then again, so is the weather! We've had a crazy week which included some good news, some bad news, and these little guys, which are pretty distracting. Sturdy Roma tomato: this is one of a few I started early to go in the hoop house. Confession: I also started my basil early. But even with a few, you are watching the latest germin...
Four weeks to last frost, and a follow up | put your shovel where your mouth is
http://putyourshovel.blogspot.com/2014/04/four-weeks-to-last-frost-and-follow-up.html
Put your shovel where your mouth is. Will work for (good) food. Four weeks to last frost, and a follow up. Where o where is spring. April 19, 2014. As did many in Wisconsin (and apparently many places in the US) we had snow this week, blarg! Even worse was waking up to a 19 degree morning, with a high of 37, which is the normal low temperature for this time of year. But really, somehow, in about 4 weeks our chances of frost will be nearly over. Right? Anybody have any Ancho peppers? I seeded peas a week ...
8 weeks to frost - transplanting | put your shovel where your mouth is
http://putyourshovel.blogspot.com/2014/03/8-weeks-to-frost-transplanting.html
Put your shovel where your mouth is. Will work for (good) food. 8 weeks to frost - transplanting. March 17, 2014. Last week I seeded the brassicas: Broccoli, cabbage and cauliflower. These generally are advised to plant 6-8 weeks before setting out, but since most of these are fairly cold tolerant, that set-out date can be a little. On the schedule this week are the remaining peppers, and a few ornamental flowers. But, also on the agenda was transplanting some of my earlier starts:. The target pots have ...
Fall garden cleanup pep talk | put your shovel where your mouth is
http://putyourshovel.blogspot.com/2014/10/fall-garden-cleanup-pep-talk.html
Put your shovel where your mouth is. Will work for (good) food. Fall garden cleanup pep talk. October 08, 2014. This is the lecture I've been giving myself the past week, and I figured I'm not the only one who needs it:. It's okay to pull the plug on your garden. And I think I"ll let that baby drag on until the final freeze. Don't try to do everything at once. Don't leave everything until next spring either! It's okay to not compost everything. If you don't have this option but you have the space you mig...

Eighth of an Acre Bounty — Random thoughts and anecdotes on cooking, critters, gardening and life on our small city lot.
Eighth of an Acre Bounty. Random thoughts and anecdotes on cooking, critters, gardening and life on our small city lot. Dark Days Challenge 08-09. Dark Days – Week 2. December 1st, 2009 · 3 Comments. The Thanksgiving contribution…. The night before Thanksgiving we decided to sacrifice one of these beauties and take it for a test run. It was great, sweet and dense without a bunch of excess water. I surfed about in search of a recipe and found one that fit the bill on Epicurious. Rarr; 3 Comments. Dark Day...
