The Great Divide «

A visual journal / journey. May 18, 2014. This is the best thing about expat life I have ever read. I love this post because it expresses so well the contradictory experience of living in a place, and trying to be a part of the place, but instead just finding yourself involuntarily sucked into or pushed into a bubble of familiarity. For our purposes let’s steal a casual definition of dissociation from Wikipedia: a mild detachment from immediate surroundings. 1,219 more words. Upon Mount Mulanje (visual).

A visual journal / journey. May 25, 2014. Behind a wall of barbed wire, behind a splintered door, a mother of two sits trembling and asks Allah why. ‘What have I done to these men? Allah is silent, but if she had asked one of the men, he would have said:. It is not about what you have or have not done. You yourself are irrelevant. My children need to eat and yours won’t starve for want of a laptop. Area 2, Lilongwe, Malawi. This entry was posted in Malawi. Lessons From Malawi →. Ramen for the Soul. This ...

An Indelicate Balance «

A visual journal / journey. May 24, 2015. Gran Canaria. Officially a part of Spain but so close to north Africa that it feels strange to hear Spanish spoken. Like so many beautiful places, the island relies heavily on tourism, often at the expense of the environment and traditional ways of life. We run for the hills, literally. First to La Aldea de San Nicolas de Tolentino, where we stay in a hostel run by an environmental conservation activist. She tells us about how the hordes of tourists who f...At La...

A visual journal / journey. Ramen for the Soul. August 30, 2014. My curiosity about Japan and Japanese culture has gradually grown into a mild obsession. I think it really started when I read Banana Yoshimoto’s. It’s a dark, depressing little book — and beautiful, because there is beauty in melancholy. I felt the same about. Which I read a few months later. After that, I knew I was hooked on… something, I’m not quite sure what. Maybe the. This entry was posted in Culture. An Indelicate Balance →. You are...

Do You Speak English? Facebook – A Great Way For Expats To Show Off. November 29, 2013. Living in a foreign county is not all sunshine and barbecues on the beach but it is very important for most expats not to let anyone else know this – after all we would hate to think that anyone stuck back in good old Blighty is actually having a better time than us! Remember the days when you used to send a postcard back home with a picture of the beach you have been frolicking on for the past two weeks? They do actu...

A visual journal / journey. August 14, 2014. I like to think:. That I am less ignorant now than I was two years ago. That I know what it’s like to live with less–to live without these things we think we need–and that happiness in its essence comes from material lightness and a richness of spirit. I know, also, that to be able to recognize this is a sign of my privilege. That in order to really learn, we must sit back and observe without judgement. That I am wiser because I’ve made an effort to be. Schifa...

A visual journal / journey. Life with Guineas: a love-hate thing. January 6, 2014. A month ago, Marie and Antoinette came to live in our garden. We built them a coop out of old pallet planks, and an outside enclosure out of bamboo. We’re… still getting used to each other. This entry was posted in Malawi. Paradise is in Makuzi.
